Maroney beats Uchimura

I thought they were fairly close in performance of Yurcheno 2 1/2 twist, until I saw this shared on monigymnastics.

Compare the videos – Uchimura v Shewfelt v Maroney

Computer software could certainly have “judged” this apparatus more accurately than humans.

Who was it that questioned why the Men are so much better than Women on Vault? :)

Uchimura is not even good at Vault

#2 juka on 08.28.12 at 5:16 am

la maroney esta mas alta que uchimura en la segunda fase de vuelo. hijueee!

#3 naama on 08.28.12 at 5:37 am

True. Maroney flies higher than Uchi – and that’s with a lower table!!
Go for the TTY girl!!

Uchimura won the all around, Maroney sat down her Mustafina, shame, Maroney did not beat Izbasa.

“Who was it that questioned why the Men are so much better than Women on Vault?”

I don’t know who it was but “the men” certainly are better than “women” on vault at the present time so don’t imply that it was a silly question.

I don’t know if it’s just the fact that he’s wearing shorts that makes it look like his hips are more open. Maroney has the better landing.

The thigh muscles are one area where female strength approaches that of males, and Maroney is lighter than Uchimura. I’m sure that helps.

So why Jon Horton is so much better at a handspring double front than is Yamlet Pena?

If fact, every single guy in the NCAA that competes a Roche is better at it than Yamlet Pena.

Overall, Maroney certainly has the better vault. But there is one detail about Kohei’s which is far superior (and which might explain why Maroney did not stick during event finals): Kohei spots the landing, and Maroney does not.

NBS broadcast this comparison (during event finals?) and also had an overlay version. You can see the women’s table is lower and that McKayla is higher. It was really neat. Wish it was online somewhere….

Ono no Komachi- Pena’s vault has the power, but it is translated into distance and not the height that she needs. If it was corrected, it is likely that she could actually land the thing. That’s the impression that I get watching her anyway. It would be very interesting to see her if she was taught it the same way as the male gymnasts you mention.

Crazy how much more height Maroney gets, especially seeing as her vault table is set lower. Really looking forward to a triple or double back from her, the idea that she wouldn’t be able to land either is almost ludicrous.

this is a weird comparison because uchimura isn’t even that great on vault. lol he has great form and landing but vault isn’t really his strength. whereas mckayla is probably the best in vault out of all the women. Male gymnasts in general are better though. one maroney doesn’t make a difference

Ooooh…a woman beating a man? Careful, we wouldn’t want this to turn into another Ye Shiwen incident where people start accusing Maroney of doing steroids, would we?

#12 kai on 08.28.12 at 4:08 pm

They won’t because Maroney is American and White. Only Chinese people dope, didn’t you know?

Uchimura is cleaner in my opinion. Amazing to see the height Maroney gets tho.

#14 TCO on 08.28.12 at 8:14 pm

she over-rotates and steps on the landing. Kohei spots and sticks. Also Uchi has more distance.

You haven’t seen the NBC video. It’s on Tumblr not only does Maroney have more height from a lower vaulting table. She has more DISTANCE & a better landing position. She did not take a step. She slightly lifted her heels, but did not MOVE!!! You need to watch it again.

#16 Elizabeth on 08.29.12 at 2:50 am

Ps. The NBC video completely overlaps them. Mckayla Maroney clearly has more distance & a much highr landing position. This should end all debate on whether, she is the best female vaulter ever. She is Period!

#17 Alexis Olson on 08.29.12 at 6:11 am

Maroney is higher, but Uchimura is cleaner. Maroney’s second vault isn’t the same level of difficulty though. Match her against any of the guys competing two vaults and she gets demolished.

Men vs Women. This should get some comments. :)

When you wish upon the interneettss…

Cool video.

“Ps. The NBC video completely overlaps them. Mckayla Maroney clearly has more distance & a much highr landing position. ”

Rick just posted the NBC video. It shows Mckayla had more height which of course resulted in a higher landing position. They landed in practically the same spot though so she actually didn’t have more distance.

I wonder what the comparison would look like against the best men’s Amanar.

#20 Ono No Komachi on 08.29.12 at 10:49 pm

Uchimura probably has the “man’s Amanar”, at least among men currently competing. The ones he did in London were not his best.

He’s not the best male vaulter now competing and he is stronger on other events, which is why he could also be characterized as “not that good on vault”.

Not too many guys who consider themselves vault specialists do not compete the Y2.5, because most of them have two 7s or higher.

The best male vaulters could blow Maroney away on difficulty, maybe not execution. Plenty of guys in the NCAA would be very happy if they could do a Shewfelt as well as Maroney does it.

“Plenty of guys in the NCAA would be very happy if they could do a Shewfelt as well as Maroney does it.”

I’m sure even Yang Hak-Seon would be happy to do a Shewfelt like Maroney. Of course if he could he would probably compete a 3.5 twist.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3BrhoiBmpI Uchimura new vault video. Let me know if Maroney can do those vaults.

#23 coach Rick on 05.26.13 at 3:56 am

Nope.

Uchimura has competed every vault. Maroney has not done any of his big vaults aside from Amanar.
