OK, now this is super pro American prediction. Douglas gets UB silver over Tweddle? and counting out Mustafina? What is this Xmas free gifts? Please!
Oh, and I forgot AA, PLEASE!! This is no longer 2008, grow up.
If He Kexin hits she will win a medal in UB.
Most of those choices are girls from the top gymnastics nations you never know a gymnast from a smaller country can also medal, there are always surprises.
the only thing they got right from their 2008 predictions were the team results where they correctly guessed that Romania would win bronze over Russia.
Women
Team
G: China
S: U.S.
B: Romania
U.S. beat China by a point at worlds last year.
Individual all-around
G: Shawn Johnson, U.S.
S: Steliana Nistor, Romania
B: Yang Yilin, China
Rain flooded Johnson out of her Des Moines gym in June.
Vault
G: Cheng Fei, China
S: Hong Su Jong, North Korea
B: Alicia Sacramone, U.S.
Germany’s Oksana Chusovitina, 33, could win a medal.
Uneven bars
G: Nastia Liukin, U.S.
S: He Kexin, China
B: Ksenia Semenova, Russia
Liukin’s dad, Valeri, was first man to do a triple back on floor.
Balance beam
G: Li Shanshan, China
S: Steliana Nistor, Romania
B: Shawn Johnson, U.S.
Li’s routine is so good she fell at ’07 worlds and still won silver.
Floor exercise
G: Cheng Fei, China
S: Shawn Johnson, U.S.
B: Alicia Sacramone, U.S.
Brown junior Sacramone has won two world floor medals.
This is actually one of the most informed mainstream predictions I have yet to see. I do question Mustafina not medalling on bars (love Douglas, but she’s short about .5 on start value). I also agree with Jazz about Kexin medalling if she hits. Other than that these are completely possible podiums. The great thing this Olympics, is that there are many contenders. Gymnasts from France, Canada, Australia, Italy, Japan and Britain will all challenge athletes from the top 4 teams for individual medals. I can’t wait!
My medal darkhorses: Kyla Ross on beam, Victoria Moors on floor and Youna Dufournet on bars.
My dark horse favorites: Beth Tweddle (I would seriously cry if she medaled–what a comeback, hometown hero, feel good story!), Chuso, and the Vietnamese vaulter who won the bronze. LOVE her.
Other than that, pulling for Jordyn, Gabby, Larisa and my girl McKayla! Would love for Larisa to sneak into the AA medals.
Some of these are a bit jumbled, but it’s so dependent on who shows up that day that we shouldn’t take any predictions seriously, with the exception of the tem competition (which I think they got right this year.
Gabby Douglas for AA silver? Really? I think so. Go on YouTube and watch the Olympic Trials from 1992 (which I attended as a hyperactive little ten-year-old). Kim Zmeskal was very much the Jordyn Wieber there, although I doubt Wieber will falter as Kim did at the Olympics. The similarities between Douglas and Shannon Miller circa 1992 are striking. Both had inconsistencies at nationals and trials (although on different apparatus). Both Douglas and 1992 Miller have high difficulty at all four events, and both of them hit brilliantly on two and a half of those.
I think the main reason they left Mustafina off these lists was her disastrous performance at Euros on every event except bars. I agree that she should be in the medal picture on bars, but certainly not in the all-around. I would have added Yao Jinnan as a dark horse for that AA bronze medal. I very much enjoyed her routines, her form, and her personality last year in Tokyo.
The Douglas hype is really tempting my curmudgeonly side to make an appearance – especially those who ignore her inconsistent record.
There is a huge difference between Zmeskal and Wieber, and Douglas and Miller. I’m only enough to remember those competitions of the early 90s as an adult gymnastics fan of 15 years experience.
Zmeskals’ victory at Indianapolis is one of the more disputed in gymnastics, but the hype around her was massive, so she went into Barcelona practically crowned by the American media – as does Douglas.
It remains to be seen whether Douglas can avoid the meltdown she had at last year’s worlds.
Otherwise, Raisman medalling on floor ex?! What are they smoking over there?
That should sad “old enough” to remember.
they are smoking a 1.5 through to a double arabian to a punch front. That is what they are smoking.

I question Iordache winning fx. She’s good, but there are better routines(well choreographed and performed) than hers. Her routine isn’t mature enough for me.
News flash, TCO, one tumbling line does not a EF winner make, or even 2 lines – not at the Olympics anyway. Also, this is women’s FX with, you know, choreography and dance requirements and stuff. All things which can be found in better quality in some other routines.
LOL this is kind of a joke. The Americans are seriously lacking artistry. I doubt Wieber will win AA. Iordache is amazing on beam, quishang is amazing on bars, musty is amazing on bars, Komova is amazingj on bars. With them all doing amanars Jordyn has no chance unless someone falls because she is not amazing on anything. In fact she quite struggles on bars. . There’s no way Raisman is getting silver on floor. The Olympics judge artistry more severly than worlds and Raisman barely medaled there. With Musty Komova Tweedle and He Kexin, Douglas definitely lacks the difficulty for a medal unless someone falls. One of the Chinese is going to medal over Mitchell. And one of the Romanians is more likely to get gold beam.
Things are problematic with Iordache’s fasciitis, which could hinder her on every event but bars.
Other news is the Maroney has a broken toe. It’s interesting that some US supporters are claiming that this is no big deal, yet there is general hysteria over Iordache’s foot problems. I think over-confidence on one side, and under-confidence on the other.
Many ‘joke’ comments here, including those raving about Iordache (a flash in the pan if ever there was one, and nothing compared to the GREAT Romanians of the past–she’s no Milo, Amanar, or Szabo, much less anything close to a Comaneci!) and Mustafina, who since her injuries has never again been and will never again be the same brilliant gymnast; she is fatally handicapped. In fact, Komova QUITE struggles on beam, as evidenced by her disgraceful performance just today in team finals, and has form breaks aplenty there to rival any of the Americans. A Chinese medal on floor is drug-induced psychosis; they have neither the difficulty NOR the execution, and never have had on floor with one or two exceptions such as Ji Liya (still the only Chinese woman ever to manage a double layout…..) Wieber’s double-double on floor is one of the best tumbling runs currently done, for those who don’t know the meaning of the word ‘amazing’, and Raisman will win gold or silver easily on floor.
