Geoffrey Taucer posted A Brief Explanation of Levels in USA Gymnastics.
It’s a nice summary, MAG and WAG Junior Olympics as well as mention of the easier WAG PREP-OP divisions in his region.
In the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic program, there are set rules throughout the country for each level.
For the lower levels (2-6 for girls and 4-7 for boys), there are specific routines set by USAG, so every kid in the country will be doing the same routines at these levels (though the boys program allows certain bonus skills to be performed in some of the compulsory routines for a couple extra tenths).
For the upper levels (7-10 girls, 8-10 for boys), gymnasts have their own individual routines. For girls, these levels still have very specific requirements, while the boys’ upper-levels are much more open-ended. …

prep-op is now called x-cell.
Thanks. I see USAG still referring to the old name in places. … Likely we’re in the transition phase.
Supposedly, a realignment of sorts is in store for MAG in the next quad. Level 8 will be the new Level 9 (age 12-13… although 10/11 year olds can compete at that level if they qualify). Level 9 will be the new Level 10 (14-15), and Level 10 will be for 16-18 year olds. Levels 4-7 will be largely unchanged. If anybody can clarify, please do so.
“prep-op is now called x-cell.”
I think USAG still calls it prep-op but different states may give it different names. Perhaps because it’s kind of a misnomer to call it prep-op as if it prepares the gymnasts for optionals when really there is no official connection. It’s a way for gymnasts to do optional gymnastics with a less intense commitment.
