Rebecca Bross at 2012 Olympics

I’m liking Rebecca more and more for London.

She’s got the coaching. She’s tough as nails.

The timing might be just right. Setbacks now could help peak for Worlds 2011 and the Olympics.

That photo by Grace Chiu from an excellent Inside Gymnastics photo spread.

… For some reason I’m not feeling so confident about Mustafina. There’s a long time between now and the Olympics. Perhaps she peaked too soon.

I have wondered the same about Mustafina. Slow her down, 2 years is a long way away! I wonder if Viktoria Komova will be the one who peaks at the right time in 2012.

I would love though to see them both clean their form up and witness what could be some of the best gymnastics ever.

Bross is just fantastic. She is one of the toughest 17 year olds I have ever seen. I can’t wait to see what 19 brings for her.

Komova’s timing is perfect. Like Shawn Johnson.

Of course the old lady Nastia won in 2008.

I don’t envy anyone trying to beat Beth Tweddle on Bars at home in London. She already has 0.2-0.3 more start difficulty ready to go. And she’s not going to get worse at her age.

Mustafina was the talent of the meet, no doubt. But Bross showed more heart and fight (the injury, overcoming the fall, better sportsmanship, etc.) I don’t think Bross “needed” another year of coming up short. Instead a luck win over Mustafina would have helped her aura with judges and the like. But she’ll be fine either way. At the end of the day, it comes down to her keeping the body from breaking down for the next two years.

Mustafina could really use some hardening up to be honest. I’d go to war with little Brossie.

Kamova timing is like SJ, but Kamova has the execution and flexibility to boot. SJ had the skills, but she was a chunker and lacked control in her landings on floor/vault and flexibility was nonexistant.

Rebecca deserved the gold medal simply because of her dedication to the sport that she loves, and because it seems like she’s already had so many bad breaks involving injury. But, she’s tough as nails and I’m sure she’ll be a definite contender for the all around gold at next year’s worlds and then the Olympics because she’s so determined and has the heart (and the talent) :) Plus, did anyone notice how awesome her floor was in the all around? (AFTER falling off of beam) She received a 15.233 for it….Lauren Mitchell of Austrailia, who received the gold medal for floor exercise, had a score of 14.833…..I think that was the best floor Becca’s ever performed and it was on an inflamed shin…..

Well sportsmanship has nothing to do with who will. And the girl did cheer for Alicia in vault finals. I will say this about Aliya. Its not like Aliya has some bad coach in her corner. Alexandrov is a great coach and the way Aliya was peaked for this worlds was nothing short of masterful.

I’m not sure Aliya will win the Olympic All Around though because of her talented teammates. And as for Aliya needing to toughen up. I’m sorry but if there’s one thing I’ve been impressed by with Aliya has been how much of a rock she’s been at this competition. This was Mustafina’s first worlds and yet the expectations and responsibility placed on her was huge. She frankly won Team Finals for Russia when you think about it, having to deal with a lot of teammates who are just not good competitors.

I wonder how much Bross will grow between now and 2012?

Mihai Brestyan couldn’t have been more complimentary about Aliya. She’s astonishingly able to hit those routines easily, though seems to be very shy off the podium.

Bross is already 17 so I’m guessing not too much more. Shawn Johnson was younger than Becca but didn’t seem to grow much while she was training.

Yeah and I find the whole Bross is tougher etc in what sense. Who knows what Aliya has had to overcome. There’s talk that she almost quit gymnastics altogether after her coach left her to go to WOGA.

I don’t think Aliya needs to toughen up, whatever that girl is doing mentally is just fine when you consider how that girl delivered over and over again at this competition.

I hope you are right.

Love this girl. But history shows that the World Champion 2yrs before the Olympics normally doesn’t go on to win the Olympics.

And the World Champion 3yrs before (Bridget, in this case) is often gone completely.
