Sherbo #1, no question.

But I would have guessed Li Ning #2.

… Li is most famous for winning 6 medals at the 1984 Summer Olympics, the first participated by the People’s Republic of China. He won 3 gold medals (in floor exercise, pommel horse, and rings), 2 silver medals, and a bronze medal. Li became the most decorated Chinese athlete at their first Olympics.

All in all Li won 14 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships titles.

Li took part in his second 1988 Olympics despite carrying injuries. It was a disappointing end to an illustrious career, as he was clearly off-form and made many mistakes which robbed him of the chance of a medal. …

I’d have guessed wrong.

Li Ning was a fantastic gymnast and deserves to be on the list. However on of the 1st requirement on the list was that the gymnast must have won a world or olympic all around title. Li Ning has won many titles or medals but never the major AA title. That criteria leaves off a lot of very successful gymnasts

Paul was Olympic Champion*. But his career was quite short.

Kurt was 2nd at World Championships.

like somebody said in the women’s thread….best “recent” and based simply on medal (it appears) count.
Rick:
I have vast appreciation of Sherbo (as you know, he was given “pride of place” in half a chapter of my book)….
but if you had “first round draft pick” in all of gymnastics history…would you pick him ahead of
Bilozerchev?
Kato?
Abie Grossfeld wouldn’t (he told me, but honest, I’m NOT trying to name drop)….me neither…..
discuss as appropriate

Nope. Sherbo had an awesome personality. I love the guy.

But he truly was a Floor / Vault specialist often way over-scored on Pommels. His Horizontal Bar was more often a joke than not. But the code didn’t penalize him during those years.

I’d probably go Bilozerchev, Li Ning and Nemov as the top 3. … They blew my mind more than any others, over my lifetime.

With Flash Back Friday the gymnast must be 5 years removed from the sport. Paul isnt even out of the sport as of right now. Kurt Thomas never won the world or olympic all around title.
