gymnastics – bar wrist rips

Canadian gymnast Brittany Rogers is back in the gym, still recovering from her foot injury suffered competing in Australia.

But what gym? Rumour has it that she’s switched from Omega to Phoenix.

Brittany posted this photo of her wrist under the caption – Bars love me.

Not too bad. Yet.

But recall it was an infection of the wrist that took Nadia out of the 1979 World Championships All-around.

Do you have a strategy for treatment / prevention of Bar wrist rip?

My best advice is to use vasoline under a neoprene wrist band. Often with a cloth wristband overtop.

UPDATE: Sara wraps electrical tape around her wrist, then wristbands as normal. … Any duct tape solution sounds good to me!

I used to use surgical spirits on my hands, it toughens the skin without drying it out.

wrapping electrical tape around the base of the wrist helped me and many training partners avoid wrist rips for years. just put wristbands and grips over the top as normal. works better than normal tape because it doesn’t roll up.

Thanks Sarah. I added your idea to the original post.

i use make up sponges taped to my wrists almost every time i do bars. they are softer than pit foam and you can use them for months. ive never gotten a rip on my wrists since using them and they dont slide, roll up, or rub.

Brittany, I have a product that I sell that my gymnasts and other clubs in the area are using that helps to clear up rips and conditions calluses to toughen the skin to keep the skin from ripping. It is called Joshua Tree Gymnast’s Salve. It is an organic skin care for athletes. If you email me at macgym29@comcast.net I can give you more info. I am going to be putting a video up about it on Gymnastike in the next few months.

Let us know when that goes up, Jason. Sounds interesting.

warm tea bags. put them on your rips and it will dry them out and make it hurt less and heal quicker:)

Chapstick works well to heal open rips quickly. Not preventative, but great when rips happen.

I have my gymnasts use “Preparation H” for rips and it seems to work very well

Ouch! We saw some pretty bad ones at USAG too. That’s why we created RipGuardian. Check us out: http://bit.ly/bbimRd.
