typos keep a blog REAL

Content is more important that stlye.

Timelyness more important than qwality control.

… That’s how we bloggers defend our shoddy work against the grammar Nazis. The Couch Gymnast was peeved on this point, lately.

I could put up a link like this:

What do you thick?

=== UPDATE:

One spelling Nazi (Dana) insisted on a correction link. You’ll now find it cluttering the right hand navigation.

Typos are going to happen. I don’t see the big problem when it’s a blog. Yes I see a problem if it is something highly professional like a Medical Paper or a Newspaper. A spelling mistake isn’t going to stop me from subscribing to a blog or stop reading it. Most blogs are personal, people blogging about what they love so they don’t have an editor as is said in The Couch Gymnast post so there might be spelling mistakes even if I use a spell check. I admit constant errors would annoy me but if the content is of interest to me and in the gymnastics world it has been hard to find gymnastics blogs. An error definitely doesn’t devalue the quality for me.

I may sound as a grammar Nazi too, but seeing not just the occasional typo but a lot of errors in a document gives me a very bad impression. English is not my first, not even my second, language, so if I make an effort to write it properly, I expect native speakers that are publishing and launching their texts to the general public to do the same. I usually feel it’s almost offensive to read things like “then” instead of “than” (and vice-versa); “recieve”, instead of “receive”, all the confusion with “it’s”, “its”, “your”, “you’re” and things of the sort.

Grammatical errors are not much different from technical errors in a routine. Mistaking “your” for “you’re” should be noted and corrected as much as crossing legs when twisting. The most common and glaring of the mistakes used to make the writer look uneducated, but now people seem almost proud of, and certainly defiant about, their (not “there” or “they’re”!) lower standards. In a day of intentional texting and IM shortcuts, paying attention to grammar may seem old school, but I see it as having respect for your (not “you’re”) readers. Few (not “less”!) people seem to care anymore, and it’s (not “its”!) only getting worse. A “Report Typo” option would be refreshing. At least if people read blogs that are well written, they may accidentally emulate them.

I am the grammar and spelling Nazi. I hate seeing glaring errors as noted above. Typos are one thing, but the errors we most commonly see are not of that sort.
Report typo option is a great idea!

I find it more offensive if the letter a person got wrong is way on the other side of the keyboard from the letter they actually used.

Will do, Dana.

Team: Grammar and spelling nazi! I am not perfect, and I do proofread before I post. But if I catch something after the fact I fix it. There is nothing wrong with having standards. There is nothing wrong with speaking and writing correctly. We should make every effort to do our language justice when we use it. We want Mexicans to learn our language when they come to this country – let’s not do the pot and kettle thing, eh?

If you have to put someone down for spelling errors then that issue is your issue. Not their issue.

TP expecting people to learn the language of the Country they live in is a lot different then a few spelling mistakes. I do not go to France to live and expect them to understand me. I make the effort to understand them.

If you respect your readers’ time and intelligence, then take the time to clean up your text before you post. If you can’t do it yourself, ask someone else to look it over.

As Mark Twain said, “He who edits himself has a fool for an editor.”
