Who did the handspring double front dismount in 1987? (time 3:10) … Oksana Limaryova?
INSANE. … Almost as insane as choosing Meatloaf as a background track. LOL
tumbling, tramp, diving, acrobatics, circus, cheer, dance, martial arts, X sports …

Nice – shame we dont see as much innovation anymore – its all “skill, skill, arm wave, skill” to get as much difficulty into the routine as possible within 1.30. Some of the choreography here is fab! Would love to see gymnasts/coaches being a little more inventive.

WOW! This montage is absolutely fantastic! The gymnastics is beautiful, and the artistry and difficulty is literally jaw-dropping: my mouth was wide open for a good portion of this. I am inspired. Can someone show Marta K this please?
MostepanovaFan is a genius, no doubt.
A lot of difficulty in that but it still had bad form and leg separations and bent knees galore.
I realize the 80′s was a long time ago and these were hard tricks but the form on a lot of this montage was trash.
The form on a lot of this was trash? What montage were you watching?
Surely Priahkina and Shush did not have the best form on beam. Also, when double backs were first done as dismounts form wasn’t so great likely due to lack of springs in the beam and such. But for the most part, the form here is either very good or no different than today.
About 90% of this was lovely stuff and/or very innovative for that time and THIS time, as well.
There was a lot of bad form (Gutsu anyone) Someone needs to open their eyes.
When will people realize that up to the mid-90s gymnasts used to have bad form simply because they could get away with it? If today’s gymnasts could score in the 9.90-range with leg separations, cowboys, low chest landings, crossed ankles and lunges, they’d do it too. I most definitely prefer it than the current CoP that deducts EVERYTHING and makes a perfect routine worth a 9.0. At least, we used to see decent choreographies back then…
That’s a very, very good point Ian. One that almost nobody appreciates.
You can’t judge yesterday’s routines by today’s rules.
I see just as much bad form today as there was back then – seems to have migrated to different spots, though. There was plenty of it then, but in general the quality of gymnastics was better.
