I recall driving from central Canada to U.S. Congress in New Orleans … noting a conspicuous increase in body size as I drove South.
Living in the S.E. States makes you fat.

I took that map and compared it to a map of the 2008 presidential election results.
And I laughed quite hard.
That is all.
Portion size makes one fat. IMHO.
Living here in the US, I have rarely finished a meal in a restaurant. My uber athlete husband finishes it, or we take it home for lunch the next day. When I was in Japan, I was astonished how the portion sizes were the right size. A Tall at Starbucks looked like a “shot” here in North America!
I agree with Dana–the amount you eat makes you fat, not where you live.

It’s called deep fried with cheese.
Dana’s correct about American portion sizes. I’ll add the buy in bulk obsession to the list. My stepmom complains about her weight. But if I ever ask if she wants me to pick up anything at the natural foods bakery, she says “why would I spend $3.00 on a loaf of (multi-grain) bread when I can go to Costco and get four loaves (with all the chemicals and preservatives to make it last for weeks)?
I suppose this explains why I gained weight post gymnastics – I had moved to Oklahoma for college followed by a few more years in Texas!! I was doomed!!? Fortunately I’ve moved back to Canada. (course it has helped much yet…)
It couldn’t have anything to do with lifestyle??
AM, just an FYI, you can buy multi-grain at Costco. Just because it’s all natural doesn’t make it better.
But the above posters are correct. PORTION SIZE That is the problem in America. Your serving size of beef? A deck of playing cards. That’s it.
My trick for deal with portion size at restaurants is that once my food comes, I ask for a box and take half of it home (or a split it with somebody).
I hate all the excuses for being fat. A person is not fat because of the amount of food placed in front of them at a restaurant. They are fat because they eat it all. They are not fat because there are a disproportionate amount of fast food places near their house. They are fat because they go to those places and eat a value meal.
The same healthy foods are available everywhere. It’s not like the north has some advantage in finding and cooking vegetables. Just because losing large amounts of weight is extremely hard doesn’t mean that it should be excused by every reason a person can think of.

You think bread made with high fructose corn syrup is better than bread made with ingredients you can pronounce?
