Shawn Johnson wins DWTS 2009

CONGRATS!

Did she deserve to win?

I think so. Sure she had Mark Ballas, super partner. Certainly they had great costumes, not easy to put together for a short, stocky built girl like Shawn.

But, in the end, it turned out that Shawn Johnson can dance.

At least, I think she can dance. Who would have guessed?

… Nastia could win this thing easily sometime in future.

From what I can tell having only seen the clips on this blog, it looks like the whole thing was done about as tastefully as it may be possible to do anything on prime-time national TV, and it looks like she handled herself very well. All in all, I feel like it should only give a good impression to most people about what the sport can do for young women. Here’s a girl who did spend a crap load of time (though not as much as others) in a gym, dedicated to one thing. And everyone always fears that when young people do this, they’ll get locked in, and won’t be able to have other experiences or be successful at other sports/activities, etc. later in life. And Shawn, hopefully, has shown the people who have those concerns that maybe there’s not so much to fear. Gymnastics clearly can prepare you in many ways for other things, even if not just physically, but mentally. We all know this, but I’m glad to see some very public evidence of it. Add that to what was hopefully perceived as happiness, energy, excitement, positivity, and I hope that is going to help paint a happier, safer, more positive image of the gymnastics persona in this country. Maybe enrollment will start increasing in gyms, and enrollment in all-you-can-eat-couch-and-TV-watching-at-home will decrease.

She definitely performed that dance with a lot more confidence and was more relaxed which made it more dynamic to watch. The first time she did the Cha cha cha I foundnd it funny how she borrowed that little hand on the knee move Alicia did in her floor routine. That time with this dance it looked tentative along with her hip movements but this time there was no tentativeness in that move or any of the hip movements. I’d say she’s alot more confident now a days. Now, please come back to gymnastics and take that new dance confidence and wow the world on floor with not just your big skills but your grace, elegance and dance.

Maybe I’m biased, but yes I think she deserved to win. She showed improvement through the show, Gilles did not.

However I don’t think Nastia could win. She’d have an extremely hard to dealing with the different characters..

If Mark Ballas could bring Shawn as far as she has apparently come (I haven’t watched any of it), Liukin would be unstoppable under his guidance. She is a far more natural mover than Johnson. I guess now we wait and see what happens with Shawn from here. I think she may have just taken one more giant step towards retirement from gymnastics, if she wasn’t already there. Her answers about returning to training are beginning to sound an awful lot like Carly’s in 2005. We shall see I guess.

I think it’s awesome that Shawn won. Don’t really have much else to add. Well done Shawn.

Sabrina was as talented a dancer as has ever been on the show and danced with Mark only to make it to week 6. You’ve got to bring a lot more to this show than natural movement and given the history of this show I think saying anyone can win “easily” sounds a little absurd. But congrats to Shawn for making it all the way.

…Nastia in there would have been soooo boring.

“She is a far more natural mover than Johnson.”

Yes that helps, but a lot of it has to do with other things. Plus I don’t think she’d be paired with Mark. I think she’d be paried… probably with Maks

Way to go Shawn!! I agree that Nastia would look great doing some of these dances. Her long legs and flexibility give her a an edge that very few celebrities other than dancers will have. But its not just potential and talent, it’s hard work and execution when it counts, and no one can ever take away what Shawn achieved. She nailed it. Awesome!!
