side effects of steroids

… Depicted is a 21-year-old amateur bodybuilder who arrived at a clinic in Dusseldorf, Germany with severe acne on his chest and upper back.

He was a constant user of anabolic-androgenic steroids, of which acne is a side effect — as is damaged sperm and shrunken testicles, both of which he also possessed.

Doctors ordered the patient to quit steroids and start taking antibiotics. Two months later, the acne was gone. So was the muscle. Only gruesome scarring remained — and as his doctors wrote last week in the Lancet, that “is likely to remain with the young man for the rest of his life.” …

Steroid use comes with risks, and i am pretty sure that most who use steroids are aware of these risks. I think that its important not to jump to conclusions just cause of this. Because of every case where there is side effects from steroids there is one of someone who takes them without any.

I mean have you heard of the side effects of the general over the counter sleep medicine?. really.
I am not taking sides, but i certainly think that the media is blowing things out of proportion.

I highly recommend watching “Bigger, Faster, Stronger” for a great discussion on the topic. Its presents a very fair perspective on the steroid use in sport.
As for steroids and gymnastics, well i don’ think we will ever have to worry about that.

I would be surprised if gym doesn’t get some benefit from ‘roids or HGH when so many other sports do.

Nice first hand account of doing ‘roids as an experiment for a book. Muscle gain was all ephemeral. See the pictures.

More first hand experience:

http://stronglifts.com/the-dangers-of-steroids-pro-hormones/

On the way up:

“I gained up to 305lbs on my first cycle. The aggression was insane. My lifts were shot up like a cannon. I was wearing XXL shirts and they were far from baggy. I was a large mammal. The HCG helped: I had no comedown & no issues.”

on the way down:

Weight drop to 250 (less than his “natural” 288) and permanently lowered testosterone level…which he will medicate for life.

TCO, a gymnast does not ever want to be 17% overweight. It doesn’t matter if it’s muscle. It’s still extra weight.

Great documentary regarding the uses of steroids:
“Bigger, Stronger, Faster”

One of the lead guys in the movie just passed away a couple of weeks ago… he was only in his 30s.

TCO, one more time, if anabolic steroids or even HGH were so beneficial for gymnasts, how come gymnasts aren’t using them?

They are not using, or someone would have been caught by now, with the widespread drug testing now conducted.

Most likely because these drugs provide no advantage to gymnasts.

I agree that the media has blown the use of steroids in sports way out of proportion. In my opinion this is part of the moral panic know otherwise known as “The War on Drugs”.

[...] from this, one must also realize that by using steroids, they hurt their bodies.  Check this out, do you really want to have this happen to you? i don’t and i wouldhope none of you would [...]

There is no advantage to using steroids in gymnastics, in fact, it would likely be a disadvantage. Steroids can cause muscle growth which would actually reduce flexibility. No serious gymnast would risk a permanent loss of flexibility for more muscle mass.

That’s my information too, Coach Chad.

Dieter Hoffmann, former Head Coach of East Germany, said the scientists there experimented with steroids on gymnasts ultimately concluding they were of no value.
