gymnasts resisting peer pressure

In my experience, kids grades 3-9 are most easily influenced by peer pressure. Good and Bad.

Boys are more susceptible than girls.

There are a lot of bad choices out there for young people.

A great response for an athlete tempted is: “I can’t. Gotta train Friday night.”

My feeling is that competitive gymnasts are the luckiest children in town. It’s a wonderful way to grow up.

That’s why I get so irked at people like ex-gymnast author Jennifer Sey. (blog)

Her book title: Chalked Up: Inside Elite Gymnastics’ Merciless Coaching, Overzealous Parents, Eating Disorders, and Elusive Olympic Dreams tells you all you need to know.

It recounts the terrible and abusive experience Jennifer had as a gymnast. Certainly gymnastics ruined her life. Right?

No. Jennifer Sey graduated from Stanford. And is a high paid, successful business woman.

I’m a mom to two wild boys, a wife to the best husband ever, a daugher, a writer, an avid reader and, last but not least, a marketer for Levi’s Jeans.

There are far worse fates, Jennifer, than being an elite competitive gymnast.

Far worse.

I proposed to Dr. Jeni McNeal a research study comparing former elite female gymnasts with their non-gymnast sisters. Let’s see which ladies are healthier. Happier. More successful.

Dr. Jeni said that thesis just might be approved.

gymnast celebrities

Pick up any fashion magazine nowadays and you are bound to wonder: Is this a sports star or a showbiz celebrity? The line between sports and entertainment is becoming increasingly blurred.

Is this article referring to Nastia’s appearance in Gossip Girl?

Not at all.

Sports heros are celebrities in China too:

… former Olympic champion, gymnast Liu Xuan, was thrust into the limelight when she retired in 2001. But now, after several years in showbiz, Liu is making a comeback.

“I’ve come full circle,” Liu says, referring to her Olympic career. “I have been trying new things for seven years and now am moving back to what I did in the past.”

The 29-year-old has gone from China’s first Olympic balance beam champion at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, to actress, singer and TV show host, and now to TV sports commentator and journalist with Hong Kong’s Television Broadcast (TVB), reporting on the Beijing Olympic Games. …

election in Canada – who to vote for?

In the USA the federal government rarely directly sponsors sport. (They prefer to funnel tax dollars to Oil Companies and Banks.)

But in Socialist countries like Canada, the Feds provide minimal and inconsistent funding. Then later claim credit for improved health of citizens.

There’s an election in Canada. Which party would do most for gymnastics sports?

Check this website:

Help raise awareness during the federal election about the importance of sport for all. It’s easy. Meet your candidates, ask question, send a letter or host an all-candidates meeting. There are plenty of resources provided below to help you take action.

news from Karolyi ranch

From The C Score:

The most recent training camp took place at the Karolyi ranch this week, with all of the Olympians absent except for Bridget Sloan. Here’s the news I’ve gleaned, with some commentary:

Chelsea Davis: Davis is apparently doing a double layout on floor! … Apparently she also upgraded on bars, adding a Geinger and a Hindorff …

Ivana Hong: Hong is rumored to be at the camp but without a coach or gym. It’s hard to say where Hong will go now that she has left GAGE …

Amanda Jetter: Jetter now has a DTY and a Patterson dismount on beam …

Jordyn Wieber: The big news is that she is throwing an apparently solid Amanar. …
