Halloween prank – Ke Hexin

My Halloween costume is now finished.

Today, I am “16” year old Chinese gymnast and Olympic gold medalist He Kexin and I have the id to prove it.

The Olympic Bars Champion can laugh now. She’s been officially declared of legal age by the International Gymnastics Federation.

Gymnastics Superstar Tour – High Bar

This bit of illegal camera phone video is so … mangled that I found it interesting right to the end of the 3min.

Terrible music, though.

gymnast Takehiro Kashima retires

One of the great ones is hanging up the grips at age-28.

The veteran Kashima has been one of Japan’s most graceful and successful gymnasts in recent history, with nine world and Olympic medals. At the 2004 Olympics in Athens, he helped secure Japan’s victory. In August, he helped Japan win the silver behind China at the Olympics in Beijing. …

Elegant and a great swinger, he’s best remembered as the 2004 Olympic Pommel Champion. But Kashima won the World Championships on Horizontal Bar in 2003, as well.

He plans to become a coach after his final competition, to be held Nov. 15-16 …

Gymnastics Canada – CANGYM

Attention Recreation Program Directors.

I’m impressed with the 2nd Edition of the CANGYM recreation program developed by Gymnastics Alberta. It’s a significant improvement on the original.

The CANGYM National Badge Program is Gymnastics Canada’s National Skill Development and Evaluation program for Men’s and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics. This program is intended for use with participants of varying abilities aged 6 and older, including beginner level participants through to entry level competitive gymnasts. …

The CANGYM Program binder is bilingual and comes complete with 5 distinct badge description sections outlining the skills in each level, and also includes original Participant Evaluation Forms and Progress Reports, along with Certificates of Participation and Completion that can be given to the participants. In addition, the CANGYM program includes a selection of Sample Coach’s comments and Routines which coaches can utilize near the end of the term. …

It’s a big binder with supporting documentation available on disk. There is no on-line support, however.

CANGYM is expensive at $110 from Gymnastics Canada. But a club needs purchase only 1 copy. Everything is photocopy ready. In fact, I would say it’s a bargain. I’m not aware of any other badge system as good.

The artwork has been completely redone. I like the new look:

The program is not perfect for every club, but it’s a great “starting point” for building your own program.

The most controversial part is the CANGYM badge program. Many clubs use it. Others clubs divide each badge level into two parts. Some clubs even produce their own badges rather than use those supplied with CANGYM ($2.50ea).

Overall, I highly recommend the binder as a resource for every recreation program.

What are her B-score deductions on that vault?

She scored 9.525.

Shayla Worley signs with Georgia

The rich get richer.

The four time defending National Champions have signed (?) a gymnast that will EXCEL at that level of competition. Shayla’s style and form is perfect for College gymnastics. She may well turn out to be the successor to Courtney Kupets as leader of that team.

… 2007 World Championship gold medalist Shayla Worley has made her commitment to the University of Georgia following what she calls a tough decision between the choice to be a Bruin or a Gym Dog. In the end, it came down to the school closest to home in Orlando, Florida. “I look forward to contributing further to Georgia success! Go Dawgs!” …

I don’t see the news on the Georgia website … yet.

best Floor Routines of the past 4 years

It was quite a bad quadrennial for international gymnastics on Floor Exercise. The least interesting apparatus, in my opinion, under the new code of points. (How many double twist side passes was I forced to watch?)

The C Score posted the best of the best.

Their #1 routine was Sandra Izbasa, 2008 Olympic Champion. Watch her gold medal winning routine from European’s 2007 on YouTube.

The rest of the best:

8. Ekaterina Kramarenko, 2007 World Championships team final (Stuttgart, GER):

7. Steliana Nistor, 2007 World Championship all-around final (Stuttgart, GER):

6. Anna Pavlova, 2008 Europeans event final (Clermont-Ferrand, FRA):

5. Cheng Fei, 2006 World Championships event finals (Aarhus, DEN):

4. Jiang Yuyuan, 2008 Olympics team final (Beijing, CHN):

3. Jade Barbosa, 2008 World Cup (Cottbus, GER):

2. Shawn Johnson, 2007 Worlds all-around (Stuttgart, GER):

Click through to The C Score to see details on their picks and video links.

Not one of these routines compares with the greats of all time in my opinion. A good NCAA routine is more entertaining for the general public than any of them.

I have my fingers crossed that changes in the code for 2012 will make this event fun for me again.

more girls have ACL injuries than boys

The first I’ve heard of this statistic. It sounds definitive.

Go to his blog on ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury and ask a question you might have on your mind. Dr. Marshall will get back to you with an answer. A special thanks to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for helping us educate our viewing audience on medical issues impacting our young athletes.

Click PLAY or watch an interview with Dr. David L. Marshall on Clubhouse Gas.

The ACL injury is one of the worst for gymnasts. It can usually be repaired, but often an entire competitive season is lost.

We need do everything we can to prevent it.
