Gymtastics Hollywood Stars

I’m often complaining how slow and boring the gymnastics competitions are in Canada as compared with the best of those in the States.

But yesterday our boys competed at their first meet of the season, the Gymtastics Hollywood Stars Classic in Calgary, Canada.

Though the event was staged in their gym, organizer Travis Oxley had transformed the place into something special and memorable. Kids got to dress up like Hollywood stars. Walk the red carpet.

And best of all, try Mission Impossible at the end of the meet. A giant obstacle course.

Where EVERYBODY can be a STAR.

=== UPDATE:

Katrina Burton from Westwinds agrees:

My kids had a blast!

It was the little details that made this meet different from the rest. Hollywood Theme, team picture before every session, best dressed awards, Theatre lights, Misson Impossible, red carpet for awards, etc. We will definately go back next year and bring the whole team.

And Coach Tracy Jegou from Brooks:

Rick, this was the best meet of the year so far!

The kids had a blast and I agree with Katrina it was the little things that made them feel so important. We will be back next year and I reccomend it for everyone!

who will win Dancing with the Stars?

Blythe on Gymblog reports that Shawn Johnson is a front runner.

This new season premieres tonight on ABC.

Sad but true, the exposure our sport gets from a World Gymnastics Champion being on this reality show may prove to be more important than the Beijing Olympics.

Go Shawn!

Would this kind of training be useful for beam?

Georgia – team is on a mission

UCLA – Bruins Lose Balance Against Georgia, 197.725-196.125

“This team is on a mission,” Georgia coach Suzanne Yoculan said. “They say they are unstoppable, and I am starting to believe them.

All hail.

Their mission is to win their 10th National Championships as a team under Head Coach Suzanne Yoculan who retires after this year.

Georgia-10.jpg

… The balance beam was UCLA’s nemesis, as the sixth-ranked Bruins had to count two falls on the event in a dual meet loss to No. 1 Georgia. The Gym Dogs scored 197.725, while UCLA totaled 196.125. …

Georgia’s Courtney Kupets won the all-around title for the ninth time this season. She also claimed the bars and floor titles. Courtney McCool scored 10 on beam, the first of her career.

UCLA v Georgia LIVE TV Sunday

Now that the Stanford (196.775) v Alabama (197.150) meet is history — both teams HIT. Looking ready for Championships — here’s the highlight of the weekend.

The meet also will be televised live – a rarity in college gymnastics – on Fox Sports Prime Ticket. The live broadcast is believed to be the first of its kind since the early 1990s. Jim Watson and ex-Bruin Tasha Schwikert will be calling the action.

Hosting the undisputed #1 team will be a good end-of-season test for the very young, very talented UCLA Bruins.

It’s going to be close, I predict.

Georgia All-arounder Tiffany Tolnay won’t make the trip due to illness, and the down time will give her a chance to rest a nagging foot injury. For UCLA, it sounds like Anna Li and Ariana Berlin are not 100%.

Georgia and UCLA, arguably the most dominant collegiate gymnastics programs the last decade, will renew their rivalry on Sunday in Los Angeles.

The No. 1 Gym Dogs and the No. 6 Bruins will meet Sunday at 5 p.m. at historic Pauley Pavilion. Georgia and UCLA have combined to win 11 of the last 12 national championships, including each of the last four for the Gym Dogs.

“We expect UCLA to give us their best,” Georgia associate head coach Jay Clark said. “We know who’s on that team and we know what we’re up against. We also know that UCLA is capable of winning the national championship. With who they had coming in and the fact that they’ve gotten some people healthy, they are as capable as anybody of winning a championship. We’ve got to be on top of our game to go onto their floor and try to beat them. It gets a little bit crazy out there with their fans, but it’s a fun atmosphere and we’re looking forward to it.”

Georgia leads the all-time series with the Bruins 31-13, including a 14-5 mark in the regular season. The teams have split their last two regular-season meetings, each winning on its home floor.

The Gym Dogs will be looking to keep its perfect season alive on Sunday. Georgia is 10-0 overall and finished its Southeastern Conference schedule with a 6-0 mark.

“Our team has done a good job of taking it one meet at a time,” Georgia head coach Suzanne Yoculan said. “Who would have thought after the West Virginia meet (when Georgia scored a season-opening 195.425) that we’d be sitting here with two to go and looking down the tunnel at the possibility of an undefeated season? Most coaches would rather have a score than a win. They would rather get a 196.8 and lose than get a 196.2 and win. I’d rather win. I think winning benefits the team more. It’s a huge confidence builder.”

The Gym Dogs also picked up plenty of confidence with their national-best 198.2 score posted last week against Florida. Georgia set season highs in all four events.

“Momentum is a huge part of every team,” Clark said. “We feel like we’re turning the corner, and we’ll find out against UCLA if we have. We’ve got to have put it together back to back. If we can string along a few together, we’ve got a real shot going down the stretch.”

can Dave train NCAA Gymnastics?

Dave’s a comedian …

on the road to prove to America that an average guy like me can challenge the biggest names in sports and entertainment to duels of strength, skill, and smarts… and stay comfortable doing it.

Dave has challenged 50cent, Nelly, Reggie Bush and Cuba Gooding Jr., to name a few.

Only 2 girls competed two Vaults. Only 4 girls competed Bars.

What’s the point?

I’m glad I didn’t buy a ticket to watch that competition.

This is the most disappointing World Cup meet I can recall, ever.

Nice shout out for coach Barbara Gibson of La Crosse:

kcgym17:

La Crosse won it again – their 13th consecutive WIAC title, and their 21st in program history. Suzanne Yoculan may get a lot of fame for her success, but Barbara Gibson of La Crosse deserves some credit too 🙂

Gym Fan:

Go Eagles! And yes…Barb has had an unbelievable career so far. 12 National Titles in 23 years…50% isn’t too bad : ) Nationals @ Hamline should be a good one…anyone who’s up in the Minneapolis are should definitely check it out one or both of the meets–see what DIII Gymnastics is all about!
