It’s a terrific gymnastics competition, but historically the results are often messed up.

Yukio Endo was one of the greatest of all time.
He won gold medals with the Japanese team in three Olympics, in 1960, 1964 and 1968. At the the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo he also received two individual gold medals, in parallel bars, and in individual all-around.

The FIG is saddened to announce the death of Olympic and World Champion in Artistic Gymnastics Yukio Endo (JPN). The great Japanese gymnast of the 1960s passed away today at the age of 72 after a battle with cancer.
Watch Bart Conner narrate an Endo highlights video for the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame.
I love the Endo. One of my favourite skills.
It’s wonderful to think his name lives on in gyms around the world.

Was Nastia offered a chance to compete on the hit TV show?
Seems there’s some debate about that in the blogosphere. Here’s the most convincing report that she was.
Diane Pucin, sport reporter for the LA Times, quotes both Nastia and her agent in an article published March 9, 2009:
Like Shawn Johnson, her American teammate and all-around medal rival, Liukin was offered, according to her agent Evan Morgenstein, a chance to appear on “Dancing With the Stars,” which begins tonight. Johnson is on the show. Liukin is not.
For Liukin, 19, her goals for now remain gymnastics oriented. Her tentative plans are to qualify for the U.S. national championships in Dallas this summer and likely for the world championships in London next fall.
…
Liukin said she considered the opportunity to be on “Dancing With the Stars” but realized that if she did the show now there would not be the chance to compete in the major gymnastics meets of 2009.
“It wasn’t doable,” she said. …

LA Times – Nastia Liukin stays focused on competing
Artistic Gymnastics Individual Championships
Milan, Italy
March 31 to April 5, 2009
No team competition.
The roster of 150 male gymnasts and 87 female gymnasts includes 2008 Olympic medalists Jordan Jovtchev (Bulgaria), Thomas Bouhail and Benoît Caranobe (France), Fabian Hambüchen (Germany), Louis Smith (Great Britain), Sandra Izbasa (Romania), Anton Golotsutskov (Russia) and Alexander Vorobyov (Ukraine).
Noticably absent, however, are the reigning all-around champions from the 2007 Europeans in Amsterdam. Italy’s own Vanessa Ferrari and Russia’s Maxim Devyatovsky will be unable to defend their titles after not making their country’s respective lineups.
…
The 2009 European Championships kick off April 1 with the opening ceremonies. Qualification will be held April 2 (women) and April 3 (men). Finals will be April 4 (all-around) and April 5 (apparatus).

Earth’s eldest international gymnast Espen Jansen from Norway (born 1968) is scheduled to compete.
Many time former champion Svetlana Khorkina is coming to Milan.
The Couch Gymnast is going. I’m looking forward to those posts.

Julia Zimmerman of MIT is NCAA Division 3 all-around champion.
In a magnificent ending to a remarkable collegiate career, senior star gymnast Julia Zimmerman won the all-round competition for the second time in three years at the prestigious National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) championship hosted by Hamline University this past weekend. Zimmerman, who also won the crown in 2007, is just the second woman in 25 years to twice win the NCGA all-around title.
On Friday, she scored a 38.275 among the four events, registering a 9.600 on the vault, a 9.450 on the bars, a 9.625 on the beam, and a 9.600 on the floor. With the top 14 competitors in each event advancing to the individual event finals on Saturday, Zimmerman also won the vault championship, scoring a 9.775 …
How good do you need to be to win the AA in Division 3?
Quite good. This level of competition does not get the respect it deserves.

There are more special features than any other video site I’ve used. And it’s still being tweaked. Gym Chat is very responsive to feedback by email.
The interface is somewhat cluttered and confusing to me. But the service has potential.
Svetlana Khorkina is one of the most unique and greatest gymnasts of all time.
Did you know she competed in the Russian version of Dancing with the Stars only last year?
Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.
What do you think of that?
Khorkina’s been a controversial athlete, no doubt. People love her, or hate her.
But I’ve always had a soft spot for Svetlana, mainly because of the amazing Bars routines she showed over the years. But also because she was such an extreme personality in a sport where so many athletes are boringly humble and respectful. Khorkina is different.
She reminds me of Mohini Bhardwaj, another controversial bad girl of gymnastics. Like most other fans, I’ve always appreciated Mohini.
Her autobiography was published (in Russian) on April 22, 2008. The title of the book is “Somersaults on High Heels”. The book is published by Olma-Press. It is unknown if the book will be published in English …
UPDATE:
She was previously a judge on Dancing with the Stars:

Here’s a look at Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson’s elegant Fox Trot from last night’s Dancing with the Stars performance show. Johnson earned a 27 from the judges for this performance, which puts her in a tie for first place with French actor Gilles Marini and reality star Melissa Rycroft.

Her outfits really work.
Nastia turned down a chance to be on the show this season. Could be the LA Times got this one wrong. Several have commented saying that Nastia was not offered a spot this season.
UPDATE: Nastia on Dancing with the Stars?
I’ll wager she’ll be on the series one day in the future. After seeing how well Shawn is doing.
