mental training for gymnastics

Suzie Tuffy-Riewald, Ph.D. posted an article for the U.S. Olympic program:

… All coaches and athletes understand the importance of training the mental aspect of performance. The mind can have a positive (or negative) influence on how athletes perform. However while many coaches recognize the importance of a strong mental game, they may not be comfortable with teaching mental skills. One remedy for this situation may be to have a sport psychologist develop and implement a psychological skills training program. Unfortunately, few programs/coaches have access to sport psychologists; therefore, coaches must take responsibility for physically, technically and psychologically preparing their athletes.

You don’t have to be a psychologist to set up a psychological skills training program. First, it is not necessary (or realistic) for the program to be comprehensive.

Second, with just a little planning, you can combine basic mental training principles and techniques into daily practice sessions. When the coach stresses the importance of mental training, it may be more effective than when mental training is a separate component of practice, delivered by an outside consultant. …

Gymnasts are thinking of “something” while they train. While they compete.

Good coaching is helping athletes find the right things to think about. At the right time.

Every gymnast is different. Coaching mental training is more of an art, than a science.

predict the NCAA Super Six

What 6 teams will qualify for the 2009 women’s NCAA Team Finals?

http://www.gymnastike.org/assets/portal/add_ons/mediaplayer-4.2/player.swf

To win a Gymnastike t-shirt, click through and list the 6 teams in rank order, with their team scores in the comments on the Gymnastike video above. (Top 3 teams from Session 1. Top 3 teams from Session 2.)

I predicted:

Georgia 198
Utah 197.5
Alabama 197.3
UCLA 196.9
LSU 196.7
Stanford 196.0

It’s a wild guess, really.

Stanford is better this season than last, when they finished 3rd. But that was an amazing Team Final for them. It will be tough to duplicate.

UCLA is young and still inconsistent. But they could finish even higher.

Blythe on Gymblog likes Utah.

What I really like about the contest video is getting a chance to see wonder woman Anne Phillips featured. She’s normally behind the camera.

A former Level 9 gymnast from Texas, Anne founded the best new gymnastics site since the now defunct Gymnast.com.

… Aside from the Olympics, gymnastics doesn’t get too much media coverage which is a shame because I really believe it’s the coolest sport in the world. You and I both know there’s more to gymnastics than girls flipping around in pretty leotards on TV every 4 years. So, I want to show gymnastics behind the scenes – how tough our athletes are, how hard they work, and what they’re like off the competition floor.

I’ll have workout videos so you can see how the best gymnasts train, and video interviews with top athletes and coaches, so you can hear their stories and get to know them on a more personal level. We’ll also have blogs, gymnastics news, and personalized training tools.

I’m currently traveling the country collecting thoughts and ideas from the best minds in the sport. Your feedback, both good and bad, is extremely welcome as this site is as much yours as it is mine. I want to make this the best site for you, the gymnastics community.

How does Anne manage to travel all over the States blogging the biggest gym events?

And how do I get a job like that?

Heels protection is necessary for workout on the beam.

Sounds like Shawn did well with the Waltz on Week 5 of Dancing With the Stars.

Perhaps Bart Conner will audition next season. (His wife Nadia was quickly fired by Donald Trump when she debuted on Celebrity Apprentice in 2008.)

where is gymnast Kyle Shewfelt?

The three time Olympic gymnast has not been training.

Instead he’s out enjoying LIFE.

From a longer update on Kyle’s blog:

Life has been wonderfully hectic.

I went snowboarding for the first time ever. It was a great weekend with tons of debauchery and hilarity. I fell so many times that I lost count and I loved every minute of it! …

… I came home and had an inkling to start pushing myself a little more in the direction of my future…so, completely out of my ordinary, I booked a trip to Thailand! Holy crap!

I feel like this trip to Thailand is going to be a great opportunity for me to clear my head, have some adventure and get a plan together for what direction I am going to be heading in. I don’t know exactly where my heart is leaning. I feel like I am finally starting to come down and gain some perspective after a very tiring, exciting and trying year. I think a lot of athletes who competed in Beijing are feeling this way. It’s tough coming home and having to restart your life. It’s tough to see the big picture because you are continually living in the past and replaying your Olympic experience, and everything that led up to it, over and over again in your head.

I don’t know what will transpire while I’m away. I have a couple of plans. The first being ‘have no plan’! Second, I want to have tons of fun, like, ‘laugh till your belly hurts’ kind of fun. Third, I want to meet as many people as possible and just be Kyle, not Olympic gymnast Kyle. Fourth, I want to push myself far beyond my comfort zone – will I bungee jump??? And lastly, I want to write a lot, reflect and listen to my heart and not my head. …
