where is coach Leonid Arkayev?

VIOLA ROADKILL fills in some details.

The most successful gymnastics coach in history is living in a small apartment, starting morning training at 6:30AM in a new world class training venue.

He has about 1000 young students and plans to develop the program over the next 4-6 years.

Having an Olympic gymnast in time for London is a long shot, however.

He’s enjoying himself. Click through for details – Leonid Arkayev – the most terrible punishment – to do nothing

Coaching in the city of Saransk, Russia, the capital of the Republic of Mordovia.

This was mentioned in an interview with 3-time World Champion Svetlana Khorkina posted in International Gymnast.

Arkayev is the most successful gymnastics coach in history. Has he been relegated to a retirement coaching position?

team jump-rope video

Coach Lisa Adlard sent us a link to an impressive video of school girls doing jump rope at a 2008 US Naval Academy venue. The soldiers loved it!

These girls are the Kings Firecrackers, and they jump as few others have. Team jump-roping is growing in popularity, supported by organizations such as USA Jump Rope and AAU jump rope, with hundreds of competitive teams …

Youna Dufournet – dangerous gymnast?

Did you see French gymnast Youna Dufournet? Her horror show Floor Exercise routine at European Championships:

… It’s not disastrous. It’s SCARY. Youna SHOULD NOT be competing those tumbling passes, and it’s downright irresponsible of her coach (who looked nothing except angry at the end of the routine) to let her do so.

She’s going to get hurt — and hurt badly — if she continues like that. I’d love to see the French Gymnastics Federation or the FIG sanction her coach. …

Gymblog

Looks like it may not have been a one time disaster. In podium training and competition at American Cup she was very dangerous on Beam dismount.

I can’t bear to embed either routine on this site. Click through if you want to watch them.

I did send an email about those two routines to Keith Russell of the FIG. Unfortunately his Scientific Commission has no authority to sanction coaches or athletes.

Is the new code pushing this gymnast to do more difficulty than she can safely manage?

UPDATE: Ellen in the comments mentions a third meet where Youna had problems with her beam dismount. And Ellen, too, blames the coach.

British Gymnastics TV free

In January we posted that excellent online gymnastics videos from the UK could be streamed FREE.

They’d planned to make it a members only subscription model, “in a few weeks”.

But now in April it’s still free to all worldwide.

Check it out via the British Gymnastics website – BGTV. An interview with Beth Tweddle and her coach Amanda Kirby is featured on the home page.

Right now I’m watching highlights from the British Acrobatic and Tumbling Gymnastics Championships from March 20-22nd.
