host a Gymnastics World Cup

The International Gymnastics Federation is trying to improve their international gymnastics meets.

I’m not sure that much has been changed. This press release does not mention the BIG prize money that I expected to be a “game changer”.

Bids are open for Artistic Gymnastics:

Further to the newly approved 2011 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup concept, the FIG has informed all its affiliated federations, that they may now apply for the organisation of an FIG World Cup Event in Artistic Gymnastics. …

FIG World Cup Series in Artistic Gymnastics will be composed every year of two categories: the A Category “World Cup” and the B Category “Challenger Cup”.

The World Cup … are the best events, staged in attractive and well known cities and venues, with guaranteed TV coverage and a limited participation. Their aim is to showcase the Worlds very best gymnasts in a media and public friendly surrounding.

The Challenger Category … are major FIG events with a broader participation. They are aimed at supporting the affiliated federations in developing gymnastics worldwide through the organization of high standard FIG international events.

At each event, the gymnasts will have the opportunity to win World Cup Points which will count towards the respective World Cup Ranking Lists. …

database of injured gymnasts

Kary linked to profiles of 25 American gymnasts. And a partial inventory of their injuries.

The list is somewhat random, the intent being (I assume) to point out the dangers of Elite Women’s Artistic Gymnastics.

Elite Women’s Artistic Gymnastics is a dangerous sport.

That’s certain.

We suffer as many injuries as any other Olympic sport.

I didn’t learn anything from this database. It would be more balanced if they had an up-to-date response from each of the women included.

What would Courtney Kupets say about her entry, for example?

See the database for yourself.

CdnGymChamps – Robert Watson – Parallel Bars

Click PLAY or watch the routine on YouTube.

Watch an interview. Robert’s got great potential.

CdnGymChamps – Jaylan Birl – Floor

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

By Gymnastics Canada’s YouTube channel

Jaylan is Canadian Jr. National Champion.

Watch an interview.

If it was up to me, I’d send Jaylan to represent Canada at the Youth Olympic Games. But Robert Watson, another great Junior, will be assigned. Leave a comment if you know why it’s not Jaylan.

The 2010 Canadian Gymnastics Championships has ended. A terrific event. Congratulations to Gymnastics Canada, Gymnastics B.C. and the local organizers.

The single best highlight for me was the wild, wacky and LOUD Trampoline and Tumbling Team Competition on the Saturday night. I’ll post some video of that madness when I can get it.

No wonder Canada is a Trampoline Sports superpower. They’ve got the right attitude in that discipline.

All scores are now linked from the official Results page.

Gafuik getting CONSISTENT

Nate is great.

Nathan Gafuik impressed me at the 2010 Canadian National Championships.

Even though he was on a down part of the training cycle, on return from a win at Pacific Rim, he could still hit routines with relative ease.

He won the all-around, Floor, Vault, Parallel Bars and Horizontal Bar.

CONGRATS.
