Russia dominated the competition in Japan last weekend. The talk of the meet, however, was this new skill.

You could call it a “layout Ray Church“.

I’m going to call it a Nabieva. Awesome.

Remember cute little Hannah Whelan? She was the tiny little thing in the British Beijing Olympic Team, who then kind of disappeared off the International elite scene?

Well, it seem the gymnast, who trains at Liverpoool under Sarah Attwell has been nursing a wrist inury for the last while. She is all grown up and, it seems, she is back and in form, as she has taken the senior AA title at the British National Championships (57.800), followed by Nicole Hibbert (55.80) and then, in third place was Danusia Francis (55.350). …

Hannah said: “ I’m really, really happy! I didn’t have any aims or expectations coming into the competition. So to then go out and win is just incredible. I’ve had injury problems so to then return and become British Champion is fantastic.”

Beth Tweddle competed only bars, easily winning.

Sisters Venus and Angel Romaeo are names to remember.

Tom Forster’s gym, Aerials Gymnastics in Colorado Springs, has these floor bars that Tom made, with octagonal wheels on the ends- 4 sides longer than the other 4.

A common drill for swinging is to have gymnasts practice backward roll to push-up to reinforce the candlestick shape and scooping action that becomes critical for good barwork. With Tom’s floor bar, the gymnast can actually grab a real bar to simulate a baby giant or extend the shoulders open and bring it up to a handstand to simulate the giant swing. The octagonal ends forces the gymnast to work on shifting the wrists ….

Fab scored a disastrous 12.550 on Horse, still finishing with 88.70 AA, 6th.

I actually prefer straddle giant. … When well done.

Great giant on the girls uneven bars showing an excellent straddle tap technique narrated by Tom Forster.

One additional tip: If the girls “toe out” while straddling, they often feel more confident that they won’t hit their toes. It also makes the feet look more stretched from the side, the judge’s angle.

I positively hate the composition of Horizontal Bar routines in 2010. But you’ve got to admire this guy, the world’s best all-around gymnast.

Next watch Kohei’s Floor. (Less impressive than the two routines above. But STUCK dismount.)

Some criticized USAG for not jumping on the bandwagon in supporting threatened Cal Berkeley Gymnastics.

They now have … guardedly.

USA Gymnastics is aware of the challenges intercollegiate athletics in general, and gymnastics specifically, may face at the University of California, Berkeley, as well as some of the initial efforts of support for the gymnastics programs. We are speaking with the athletic director to understand the circumstances and the most effective way to address them. Once we have a better understanding of the matter, we will work with the appropriate entities to develop a full-fledged and targeted effort.
