why I watch Olympics on TV

If you are tempted to buy tickets for the London Olympics … check this post by I-Gym first:

… The London 2012 schedule has just been released together with some eye popping prices! There are two things that I just can’t get my head around, namely the price categories and the split qualifying sessions for gymnastics. …

There are five ticket prices from A to E, the cheapest being £20. Sounds great? What will you get to see for that price? Here is a pic I found of the O2 (sorry) Greenwich Arena taken from what I would guess is the top row of seats. ..

gymnastics – new design for flat bars

Mark Kurmey was inspired after a discussion at an advanced coaching course.

When he got home he changed his ‘flat bars’ to be safer for the wrist:

Interesting. … They are by far more comfortable in cross support:

We can’t call them ‘flat’ bars. I’ll call them Kurmey bars.

Do you think the gymnasts might slip / slide down the slope on regrasp skills like Stutz?

which States train NCAA gymnasts?

An unofficial count of current WAG in Collegiate Division 1 competition by WORLD GYMNASTICS:

1. 111 – California
2. 90 – Illinois
3. 59 – Pennsylvania
4. 57 – New Jersey

5. 50 – International Gymnasts
6. 49 – Texas

… see the entire list

The gist of that post is to suggest that some school in Texas start a program:

… all but two of the top 15 states hosts a university with a D-I women’s gymnastics program (#6 Texas and #13 Virginia …

… just take a look at the University of Arkansas. They started their program in 2003 and have already made it to the NCAA Championships a few times and are currently ranked in the top 15 in the country. …

That would be a great topic for the Gymnastics Association of Texas Congress, Sept. 2-4th, 2011.

Andreea Raducan Facebook FanPage

The real winner of the 2000 Olympics maxed out at 5000 fans on her personal page.

So she started a Fan page, too. Like.

When Andreea ‘won’ the Olympics, she was tiny.

Close to the optimal size and weight for females doing advanced acrobatic skills.

another Chinese age falsification scandal?

Started by discussion in blogs and chat rooms, It’s hit the mainstream media, and the IOC.

… “Definitely, if there is a discrepancy it must be solved,” Rogge said Monday in Prague.

… The discovery comes less than a year after the IOC stripped China of its 2000 Olympic bronze medal in women’s team gymnastics for using an underage girl. That violation was uncovered during an investigation into age fraud by China’s team that won the gold medal at the Beijing Games. The 2008 team later was cleared after Chinese officials provided original passports, ID cards and family registers showing all the gymnasts were old enough to compete. …

NANCY ARMOUR – Ages of Chinese skaters in question

… Among the skaters whose eligibility is in question are Zhang Dan and Zhang Hao, the 2006 Olympic pairs silver medalists

USA Today

My guess is that this one will blow over. No repercussions whether China was guilty or not.

Florida Gators … and the rest

note: this post was originally incorrect. It’s been updated with the correct list. Thanks SEC fan

The Feb. 14th rankings are out from GymInfo.

I said that this past weekend would confirm whether or not Stanford was the #2 team in the nation.

And Stanford won both meets against tough opponents.

And Stanford set a school record for its best start ever.

But I’m still not convinced.

Right now it’s Florida flying high. And a log jam for #2.

The highest scores this year are Florida, Oklahoma, Alabama. I’m not sure Stanford can score high, unless Kristina Vaculik suddenly starts putting up 9.9+ on every apparatus.

I could even see UCLA getting it together for a 197.5 team score by Championships. They very nearly beat Stanford this weekend.
