On that Discussion, I was harshest. A flat NO to the idea of using that Beam in competition. It’s not the direction I’d like to see the apparatus go.

But I should clarify that I’d love to have one of those beam for training.

I’m a fan of low ‘freeway’ beams in training, especially for our youngest kids.

I’m less fond of high wide beams, though they could be useful for older kids in certain circumstances.

Janssen-Fritsen – Training Balance Beam ‘Wide top’

Soft top ‘club ‘ balance beam 20 cm wide. This beam has been developed especially for training halls where very young girls start their beam training. This beam has the same features as the regular soft top beam, with height adjustable legs and a very soft top but it is 20 cm wide.

The downside, of course, are those kids who develop a psychological dependency on the width. They can’t stay on the freeway too long.

Her technique almost makes you forget you’re watching a basic routine, until you see her scores…I was very impressed by her bars, even though it was something you’d see from a much younger girl. She did win beam, something she’s kind of an expert at. …

I don’t really have anything to say about them, other than they were very messy form-wise on each event, and Irina Yashina vaulted INTO the vault table at one point…they were flipping around like mad on the bars, falling down, etc. It was pretty discouraging to watch…they’re nothing like their counterparts who performed at worlds! …

At times written off this season, the defending champions are suddenly joining the log jam of teams hoping to pounce, should Florida falter.

… In its first home meet in six weeks, the ninth-ranked UCLA Gymnastics team scored a season-high 197.475 …

The Bruins (7-6) earned seven scores of 9.9 or better and had 21 out of 24 routines score at least 9.8. …

This is a repost. It’s worth watching this routine again, in any case.

Katelyn’s routine was awarded 6.9 difficulty, higher than any at Worlds 2010. Yet Katelyn Ohashi is not age eligible for the London Olympics.

She misses by a few months … as did Nastia Liukin in 2004.

The RQS is based on the six best regular season meet scores, three of which must be away meets, then the high score is dropped. You then average the five remaining scores. …
