Christmas Gift Special – $10.00 off.

Have you wanted the G.S. George text but been deterred by the $79 plus shipping price tag?

Order from www.WinningGymnastics.com and use the Promo Code “10-OFFXMAS” to get the $10 reduction. Or telephone 760-458-4993 if you find that easier.

Of course there are already discounts for buying more than one book at a time. The best deal, I think, is Flat Rate Priority Mail shipping for 3-6 books in the USA fixed at $15.00. … Or 3-6 books overseas for $45.

Thank to Wellness Press for advertising on this site. And for giving us first notice of the Christmas special.

The ever thoughtful Mark Folger’s response to multiple stories of inappropriate behavior toward children from coaches in college football, gymnastics and college basketball in the popular media right now:

TEN STRATEGIES FOR PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN (and their good coaches)

1. A coach should never be alone with a child, not before practice, not after practice, not during travel.

2. Coaches and athletes should never share hotel rooms when traveling.

3. Coaches should not provide special treatment to one or two athletes compared to the rest of the team. This could be trips to movies or ballgames, gifts, etc.

… see the rest and Mark’s commentary on FOLGER’S GYMNASTICS

All good reminders.

Your biggest looming potential landmine is Facebook. Tweets, chat and Facebook messages from 2011 will be used as “evidence” in courts of law for years to come. In a few of those cases, coaches will be wrongfully accused.

Put things in perspective. In my city female gymnasts are the most protected children in their schools. Over-protected more often than under-protected, I’d say.

Taylor Lindsay-Noel is the Seneca gymnast who was paralyzed from a fall while training a Bars dismount over 3yrs ago.

We’ve not heard much from her since. … Until now. 🙂

She’s launched (like others) a campaign to have Ellen invite her to the TV show.

Click PLAY or watch Taylor’s pitch on YouTube.

She might not get to Ellen. But the campaign itself is a great way to bring awareness to spinal injury research. Not to mention a very good reminder to every coach and gymnast who hears her story to be CAREFUL in the gym.

Thanks Taylor.

She asks that you link to her video. Or reach out to Ellen herself:

Laura on Between the Olympics is trying to second guess the judges from the World Championships Beam final, doing detailed analysis from video.

For example …

Let’s compare Raisman and Ponor’s leaps. one got credit, one didn’t.

… It looks pretty close. Honestly, I would downgrade both. Neither of them seem to have twisted completely. …

Of course the judges have a different angle, accounting for some of the discrepancy.

A Vietnamese site calls their gymnasts kings and queens after winning medals in 11 out of 14 Finals in Artistic Gymnastics at the recent SEA Games.

WOMEN’S ALL-AROUND

2. Do Thi Ngan Thuong (Vietnam) 49.700
3. Lim Heem Wei (Singapore) 49.484

Do Thi Ngan Thuong was the first gymnast to represent Vietnam in Olympic competition in Beijing … but tested positive for the banned substance furosemide. 😦

… Do surprised fellow athletes and coaches when she embarked on a comeback five months ago, following the two year doping ban ending. She ended her career with a total of three medals from this edition of the South East Asian Games – a silver in the All Around, and gold medals on both the Uneven Bars and Balance Beam.

… Thuong was on the ebb after the doping scandal at Olympic 2008 in Beijing . That the saddest memory in her life.

“For me, this is a big lesson for me and will never repeat it. I also hope that it will be a lesson for young athletes and they will be able to stand up against whenever they fall,” …

After graduation from the Sports and Physical Training University, Thuong has become a coach in Hanoi. She is in charge of seeking young talents …
