Jesolo wrap-up

THE ALL AROUND was in Jesolo. The best report I’ve read:

For the fifth year in a row, the S.G.A Gymnasium Treviso brought some of the world’s best gymnasts to Lido di Jesolo. …

This year the US brought a whopping total of fourteen gymnasts – nine seniors and five juniors. …

The US delegation comprised thirty people, meet organiser Giorgio Citton, whose energy carries the meet, said. The organisers pay for accommodation and full board and follow up the competition with a tourist day trip.

The past years the US delegation has gone to nearby Venice (a must see attraction) but this year’s trip was to be to Rome (another must see attraction).

Perhaps the location is the argument that draws the US contingent to the meet, perhaps it the fact that it is a guaranteed big team win year after year . The hosts are in a different league and few of the other teams bring their top stars in top condition this early in the season. …

According to Citton, the US have already confirmed their participation for next year. …

… The Italian juniors look set to contend for medals at next month’s Junior European Championships. They competed in Jesolo without stand out Elisa Meneghini but Enus Mariani was perhaps the revelation of the junior meet. She placed second in the AA to Priessmann by less than a point despite vaulting only a full-twisting Yurchenko. On bars, where she dismounted with a stalder full to immediate double layout, her D score of 6.0 matched Ohashi’s. …

what we don’t know about Round-off

Power tumbling coaches pity Artistic tumbling coaches as simpletons. For every drill we use, they use 15 or 20.

This isn’t what you and I are doing in the Artistic gym. …

Brett MacAulay linked to that on the T&T Coaches Canada Facebook page.

For the record, I don’t like young gymnasts overturning their hands. The “classic T” hand position is still what I teach.

For the record, most Artistic coaches pity Cheer tumbling coaches as … simpletons. 🙂

no Bars today, coach …

The Auburn gymnasts sent this to coach Jeff Graba one day before workout.

problem with AAI landing mats?

I’ve not heard anything about this except from FIG by email:

For the recent Visa American Cup, which took place March 3 of this year at New York City’s (USA) Madison Square Garden and which counts for the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup, the American apparatus manufacturer AAI supplied landing mats which have no valid FIG certification and which are incongruent with the FIG specifications currently in force.

Disciplinary procedure has been lodged by the FIG …

Alaina Williams, Steven Legendre engaged

Congratulations.

Gymnasts Alaina Williams and Steven Legendre can only dream of what it would be like if they’re able to make it to the London Olympics this summer.

Both are trying to represent the U.S. in separate gymnastics disciplines, and Legendre also serves as Williams’ coach. On top of that, try to add in the time it would take to plan their upcoming wedding.

“That’s a lot to do,” Williams said. …

Williams’ quest for the Olympics began in earnest this weekend in Tulsa, with the first of three qualifying legs. The second qualifying event is in Cleveland in May, and the last one will be in San Jose, Calif., in late June.

She recorded a score of 50.845 to finish third, behind Savannah Vinsant (52.710) and Dakota Earnest (51.440), and will have to make up ground in the remaining two qualifying events. …

Jesolo – Brenna Dowell – Floor

12bmills suggests she’s almost an American Lilia Podkopayeva. Great forward tumbling including Handspring double front pike.

Brenna Dowell is coached by Al Fong and Armine Barutyan at GAGE.

Catalina Ponor – NOT GONNA STOP

Ponor — a triple gold medalist at the 2004 Olympic Games — won both women’s titles Friday.

On balance beam, she wobbled on her opening switch ring leap but hit the rest of her tricky set (round off, two-foot layout; double turn; Onodi, ff back pike; front aerial, ff layout; switch leap Kochetkova) before sticking her double pike dismount (6.5 Difficulty score).

The 24-year-old Romanian upgraded her floor routine from qualification, tumbling a double layout, two whips to tucked full-in, an untidy triple full and a double pike. …
