Is there something the matter with me?

For some reason, for the first time, I actually want to see this … post-Olympics letdown. 🙂

ezine @rticle CRAP

Lance Winslow:

… While watching the 2012 Olympics in London on NBC I was wowed by the performance of the US and Chinese athletes in diving and gymnastics, along with the freeze frame shots of the dives, vaults, and floor exercises. It occurred to me that we could easily design a computerized robotic coach which would analyze, judge, and grade not only events, but also work as a coach in practice offering strategic advice to help the athletes better themselves, and I hate to say it, but the robotic system I am envisioning would be even better than the human eye, or a human coach. Let’s talk. …

The author Lance Winslow, like most ezine @rticle blabbers, has absolutely no idea what he’s talking about.

How could he? That’s Lance’s 27,111th ezine article.

He writes them for a few pennies each.

I won’t link to that nonsense.

hitting the sweet spot between overparenting and underparenting

A good article in the NY Times by MADELINE LEVINE:

PHRASES like “tiger mom” and “helicopter parent” have made their way into everyday language. But does overparenting hurt, or help? …

Decades of studies, many of them by Diana Baumrind, a clinical and developmental psychologist at the University of California, Berkeley, have found that the optimal parent is one who is involved and responsive, who sets high expectations but respects her child’s autonomy. These “authoritative parents” appear to hit the sweet spot of parental involvement and generally raise children who do better academically, psychologically and socially than children whose parents are either permissive and less involved, or controlling and more involved. …

iPads for Coaching

… The iPad has “invaded” the pool deck and revolutionized the way diving coaches train their athletes, says coach Aaron Dziver, who guides the careers of Canadian Olympians Alexandre Despatie, Reuben Ross, and Jennifer Abel. …

Over the past year, Dziver says it has become the norm to see international coaches raising aloft their iPads en masse during competitions to record and analyze the dives of their athletes. …

Dziver uses an app called Baseball Coach Plus HD and adapts it for diving. … $2.99 …

Canadian divers newest weapon, the iPad

Be careful not to buy the Tom Daley game, by accident. 🙂

Al Fong told us that he prefers iPad analysis over any and all of the fixed video review systems he’s seen in Artistic gyms.

Uchimura triple double STICK

From a new Uchimura tumblr.

If you aspire to have gymnasts train the most difficult skills, you first must physically and technically train athletes to “land“. Many of the Vault injuries in competition we’ve seen of late are athletes who train only on mats in a pit.

To compete triple double, you need train at least quad double. (VIDEO)

The Women’s Technical Committee should research the best “landers” in the sport, and set ideal models on how to do so most safely. Those would be the correct (not deducted) techniques.
