Florida cheerleaders grounded

#UngroundUFCheer

Florida officials told cheerleaders Nov. 16 they could no longer perform acrobatic stunts and tumble during games. The decision came days after an Orlando Magic cheerleader was injured during a performance at a basketball game.

University officials said they took a proactive stance “to protect the cheerleaders” instead of waiting for a tragedy to occur.

Cheerleaders disappointed that they couldn’t tumble at their last home game of the season took their protest to social media, tweeting under the hashtag #Unground UFCheer.

Athletic association spokesman Steve McClain said the danger associated with acrobatic stunts is “simply not worth the risk to the cheerleaders or to the University of Florida.”

Injured stunt team performer Jamie Woode will meet with local media on Friday to give an update on her recovery. She had three vertebrae fractures and a broken rib.

In related news, Steve McClain proclaims that birds at U Florida are no longer allowed to fly. They must walk while crossing campus. 🙂

They might fly into his thick skull.

I assume McClain will next be cancelling Football. Too dangerous.

Yamawaki: Horton and Yamamuro

In response to Uncle Tim’s query as to whether there are any TRUE Yamawaki’s on Horizontal Bar

Nick Blanton:

Here is a pretty good version. Back is turned before passing over the bar, and pretty straight body….no catch though.

Some cited current Japanese international Koji Yamamuro as the best they could recall.

Still not happy?

How about this computer graphic?

Kyoji Yamawaki has two named skills. He was a Bronze medalist in Team at the 1984 Olympics.

Aussie Gymnastics film

Couch Gymnast linked to this trailer in an article by Yvette Stanton:

A Second Chance is a new Australian independent film about the world of competitive children’s gymnastics.

It is the story of a rivalry between two talented gymnasts, Maddy and Chelsea. Chelsea is ‘Miss Perfect’ and always wins competitions, while Maddy’s low self-esteem means she thinks she will never be able to win. However, with the help of a new coach, Maddy and her teammates aim to win the final competition. …

It may be Make It or Break It for L6 State gymnasts, but at least it promotes our sport in mainstream media.

The film is looking for distribution worldwide over the coming months.

on the FIG elections …

NORA SCHULER posted an insightful interview with Wolfgang Willam, unsuccessful candidate for vice president, current Executive Committee member.

Were you surprised that Bruno Grandi was re-elected by such a large majority?

I wasn’t surprised he was re-elected. But it was surprising that it was such a large majority since it was the first time he had two opponents. In this respect it was an impressive result for him personally.

I’m in Senegal, Africa right now. Bruno Grandi is extremely popular here. He’s been tireless in trying to help smaller nations grow FIG sports.

I’m looking forward to what he does in this last mandate, freed from the need to run again in 2016. From his most recent Newsletter (#67):

… the Codes of Points are a priority on my agenda. I am getting a variety and increasing number of signals telling me to revisit the format and handling of our competitions, which no longer meet the needs of our public. This is of utmost importance …

gorgeous Gym d’Arques, France

Complexe Gymnique d’Arques

Blythe Lawrence in 2011:

The 6,000 square meter training center …

The beautiful and colorful training gym in Arques, France.

I was able to visit Arques and see the new complex late last year. It is sparkling and simply the most beautiful gymnastics venue I’ve ever seen. …

Everything in this building feels brand new and state of the art. A set of Olympic medals from Beijing and stuffed animal Olympic mascots are displayed in the waiting area on the first floor. The airy gym, stocked with Gymnova equipment, is all white walls and blonde wood and the company’s signature red and white mats. The building’s roof has 1,200 square meters of solar panels and produces more energy than it consumes.

There are rooms named after 2004 Olympic uneven bars champion Emilie Lepennec and Laurent Barbieri, who won silver on vault at the 1985 World Championships. (Before Thomas Bouhail did him one better in Rotterdam …, Barbieri was France’s last male gymnast to win a world medal on vault). …

can anyone do a proper Yamawaki?

Uncle Tim can’t find any.

He checked the finalists on Horizontal Bar at the 2012 Olympics, for example.

Those are supposed to be layout with the half twist completed before crossing the rail.

Will the new MTC finally crack down on the many crappy Adler + Yamawaki combinations?

I hope so.
