Jacoby Miles thanks supporters

Jacoby Miles is a young girl facing so much, and one of the first things she wants to do is thank others for their support and generosity.

“It’s amazing, it’s awesome,” she said.

On her bed is a stuffed dog sent by Olympic medalist Nastia Liukin, who also sent flowers and made a phone call to tell Jacoby to hang in there. …

inspiration of the day – Arthur Boorman

When Arthur Boorman was injured in the Gulf War, a botched surgery left him immobile and depressed.

Having been told he would never walk unassisted again, the 47-year-old ballooned to 297lbs and gave up hope of ever being happy again.

But thanks to a revolutionary form of yoga, Mr Boorman managed to lose a staggering 140lbs in just ten months and now can not only walk without his canes and leg braces, he can run. …

coaching McKayla Maroney

Great interview — Marina Mazor with Artur Akopyan the morning after Olympic Trials:

After her injury, how concerned were you about her coming back and making the Olympic team?

That was a sad time for me. I thought it was very serious, the head injury. And nobody knew what was going to happen. But I trusted and knew she was strong mentally and has a brave heart. I talked to her parents and they convinced me. Even her father said, “the Maroneys are hard headed. She will come back. She will do it.”

What is is about McKayla that makes her a special athlete?

First of all, she has a very good heart. She has a beautiful personality. … She’s working hard. I will never have to raise my voice with her. She’s a very strong and intelligent girl. But at the same time, she’s girly and soft. And lady-like.

When you look at her, you assume that she wouldn’t be strong in the leg events as she has a very slight build. How does she excel on the leg events?

She’s actually a very powerful gymnast. She is has like a gift from God in the power, the quickness. And she is a true athlete. Just a gift from God. Not many people have those things.

What’s your funniest memory working with her?

I don’t know. I would say, we don’t have a funny time because she’s very serious with what she does in the gym. I can not joke with her. I can say something funny and she will smile and walk away and then back to serious and about her training.

Gao Jian, Nellie Kim consult Malaysia

The Malaysian Gymnastics Federation (MGF) have engaged two experts – China’s Gao Jian and Russia’s Nellie Kim – to address the decline in standard of the national artistic gymnasts.

Gao Jian is the former chief coach of China, who reaped a golden harvest at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, while Nellie is a former Olympic champion and the current FIG women’s technical committee chairman.

MGF president Datuk Dr Zakaria Ahmad, fresh from his appointment as a council member of the world governing body (FIG), said: “Gao Jian and Nellie are willing to come in as consultants to revise our training programmes so that we will have a credible team for the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games.

“Gao Jian will focus on the men while Nellie will oversee the women. …

best standing flipper?

Charlie Tamayo?

Thanks Brigid.

_____ Update from Scottish MAG National Coach Jim Holt:

I have huge respect for Charlie Tamayo, but the most amazing standing tumbler EVER was a guy named Waichiro Miki. Miki-san could do a standing double back salto from and land ON a one-inch wrestling mat. No springs (except in his legs), no pit, just a guy who could explode off the floor, wrap tight, and land with his feet under him. Unfortunately, no video is known to exist, but Dan Connelly and others who knew him can verify this.

Waichiro was coached at Nippon U. by Yukio Endo, and was Assistant Coach at Washington State University in the mid-70s. Prior to that, he worked with Hal Frey and Mas Watanabe at Cal, and subsequently had/worked at a gym in Santa Clara with US Jr. Boys…..can anybody out there in the blogosphere back me up on this?

Leave a comment if you’ve ever seen video of Miki-san.
