Tamayo v double layout 1/2

Tamayo is an F-part (0.6)double layout Arabian. Named for the great Charlie Tamayo … who did not compete it often. I couldn’t find a routine on YouTube.

Everyone’s raving about Stacey Ervin’s at Winter Cup.

Here’s Kieran Behan training a good one. (VIDEO)

Here’s Kyle Shewfelt training it.

Kyle trained it into punch front 1/1, as well.

… On the other hand, that’s the skill where Kyle broke both legs and did ligament damage. At 2007 World Championships podium training. The landing is blind and dangerous.

As Jessica O’Beirne pointed out in the most recent episode of GymCastic, Winter Cup AA Champ Jake Dalton mounts with double layout half out, not Tamayo.

That’s a great trick too. But it’s only a D-part (0.4) — and it’s in the same box as double layout, so you can’t compete both elements in the same routine.

In these cases, it’s clear. But there are going to be variations where it’s very difficult to tell the difference.

If I was Steve Butcher, I’d propose both be valued as E-parts. Both be considered the same skill.

Shewfelt on GymCastic

One of the most interesting interviews so far, 2004 Olympic Floor Champ Kyle Shewfelt.

In this episode, Kyle chatted with Uncle Tim about the Winter Cup; then told us what it felt like to compete in the mythical “zone,” how to party at the Olympics, what it felt like to break both legs at once, about his FIG proposal to bring men’s gymnastics back to its artistic roots, gives tips on combating homophobia and bullying of gymnasts, and how to put on an innovative fun meet that creates memories for kids and their parents. Yes, we said parents!

Leave a comment if you’ve got a list of the Canadians. As usual, it’s not easy to find on Gymnastics Canada online. So far I see no improvement in communication in the new quadrennial.

Chelsea Werner update

Chelsea Werner is a world class gymnast with Down syndrome needing fundraising for travel and training for the 2013 season.

Sports – Danville, California, United States

She’s now age-21. And still competing.

Chelsea

… While in Atlanta, she was also invited to participate in “World Gym For Life Challenge” in South Africa in the summer of 2013.

We need extra support

Since Special Olympics has dropped the gymnastics program in Northern California, Chelsea and her coach, Dawn Pombo, are not eligible for any reimbursements for travel, training etc. Chelsea’s coach is required to be with her at any event she competes in. Many opportunities are becoming available for Chelsea to share her talent and love for gymnastics! However funding is needed to allow her to continue her training and to pay for travel to competitions. We are looking to raise $10,000 for her 2013 season. …

Georgia fan v Florida

A very entertaining and personal report on last weekend’s competition.

197.300 to 196.175

My Saturday at Stegman by Katy Jones:

Without having any sort of friend, familial, or geographical connection to the University of Georgia, I’ve been a fan of the Gym Dogs for the better part of a decade. …

The highlight of the first rotation for me was marked by Brandie Jay’s vault. I (and apparently one of the judges) thought it was worthy of a 10, but a 9.975 was awarded instead. …

Georgia finished the rotation with a season-high 49.55 and a ton of energy, but the Gators had an impressive showing themselves on bars. The 9.925 and 9.95 posted by former elites Mackenzie Caquatto and Bridget Sloan, respectively, contributed to the 49.375 Florida bar total and definitely set the tone for how the rest of the Gators’ day was going to go. …
