Thank God.

I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay.
I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation. …
A watershed day. Homosexuality is becoming accepted by a statistical majority of people in the western nations.
Thanks Jason. You’ve got guts.

The next FIG event takes place June 21-23 in Anadia, Portugal, with a World Cup Challenge for apparatus.
Examiner – Canada’s Ellie Black thrice golden at Ljubljana World Cup
World Cup in Slovenia — Ever since she burst on the international scene a year ago with double gold medals at her first World Cup meet, Halifax gymnast Ellie Black (Alta) has been on a roll.
Black, who played a key role in helping the Canadian women’s team notch a best-ever finish at the London Olympics last summer, won three of four events at a World Cup meet on the weekend, adding double gold in the floor and beam finals on Sunday to Saturday’s victory on vault.
“It feels incredible,” said Black, who has now won a total of six medals at three consecutive World Cup meets.
“I came here to get more experience and try out some new skills and it turned into a really great trip for me.”
Black dominated the field in the balance beam final with a score of 14.250 points, well ahead of runner up Noemi Makra of Hungary with a score of 13.975.
“I’ve never really hit my beam routine exactly the way I want to in competition and it was great to go out in the final and do it the way I planned,” said Black, whose two best events in the past have been floor and vault. …
I’m so happy for the Canadian Women’s National Team program.
Despite having next to no funding last cycle, they are podium contenders now in almost every competition.
Here’s an out there idea from The Balance Beam Situation:
… I propose that we consider turning Sunday from an event final into a true all-star game. This isn’t a new idea, and there are certainly pros and cons to it, but it is worth discussing.
The competition would be conducted in the format of a normal quad meet, but the teams would represent the conferences. We would have an SEC team, a Pac-12 team, a Big Ten team, and a Best of the Rest team all going head-to-head. …
As is done for all-star games in professional sports, the six-gymnast lineups on each event should be a mixture of a fan vote and coaches’ decisions. For each of the four teams, fans could vote online for three competitors on each event, and the team coach could choose the other three. …
Imagine an SEC vault lineup of Hunter, King, Sloan, Courville, Williams, and Milliner going up against a Pac-12 lineup of Zamarripa, Wilson, Dayton, Blalock, Courtney, and Dabritz …
While it’s true that the Individual Apparatus Finals on Sunday are normally a letdown. An afterthought. I’m not convinced that an All-Star final would be an improvement.
Better would be to automatically qualify the top 3 by RQS on each event to the final, as FIG does at the World Championships prior to the Olympics.
I was sitting with LSU during Floor finals. It’s poor marketing to have Lloimincia Hall sitting in the stands watching Floor when her routine was the most talked about all season. Many fans were disappointed that she didn’t qualify to the Final.
There should be more reward for being one of the top ranked over the season.
