Splitz Gymnastics, Michigan

Yet another strong club in Michigan.

In this week’s WOW, we get to experience a workout with up-and-coming coach Justin Laury from Splitz Gymnastics in Michigan. This is a summer morning training session with optional level gymnasts and Junior International Elite Vanasia Bradley.

Watch as coach Laury takes them through warmup, uneven bars basics and new skills, trains vault at a special station on the tumbltrak, and transitions into a new cardio workout.

Good potential for a young guy. But that’s too much forward tumbling for my liking. The rules should reward the gymnast who can demonstrate a wide variety of skills.

Stacey Ervin is a member of the 2013 NCAA National Championship team from Michigan and Jess’s favorite tumbler. He talked with us about: stag jumps, artistry training, how Michigan star Jordyn Wieber influenced him, training with Olympian Sam Mikulak, the infamous Michigan “Fail” video, how to make pommel horse more interesting, surviving the grief of his mother’s death as a freshman in college, his Dr?gulescu upgrade, working a triple double, landing with purpose, and then… Uncle Tim creates a 7.3 floor routine for him during the interview! It’s a gymnerd’s fantasy-gymnastics dream come true!
