Gymnastike – 2013 World University Games Event Finals RECAP and RESULTS (videos)

Gymnastics Canada – Ellie Black – Third Time’s The Charm:

KAZAN, Russia — After just missing the podium twice at the World University Games Canadian all around champion Ellie Black of Halifax (Alta) bounced back for two medals on the final day of competition Wednesday in women’s gymnastics.

Black placed a close fourth in both the all around and vault events, but wouldn’t be denied …

FISU Vault Final – Afanar

1T. Afanasyeva
1T. Hong Un Jong
3. Paeska

Andy Thornton:

This women’s vault final was great. What an incredible surprise to see that Afanasyeva has suddenly become a world medal threat on vault

Overall, this was one of the best international vault finals we’ve had in a long time…at least in terms of difficulty. We had three Amanars, two Chengs (one not landed), some laid out Podkopayevas, handspring rudis, and Tsuk double fulls. That Tsuk double full from Ellie Black was particularly good – much better than her handspring rudi. …

Finally, it feels so much more right to award two medals when there is a tie. The arbitrary tie-breakers that plagued the Olympics in London did nothing but taint Olympic medals with asterisks and turn pure Olympic moments into somewhat artificial ones. They caused far too much controversy and frustration, and seeing Hong Un Jong and Ksenia Afanasyeva share this gold medal at the World University Games confirmed to me that I am all in favor of handing out shared medals when the scores fall that way.

Aliya Mustafina – Eyes On Fire

Chris Saccullo:

Despite just recovering from a severe illness Aliya insisted on competing. Here are some highlights from her gold medal performance at the Individual All Around at the 2013 Universiade Games in Kazan.

USA FISU Team 2013

These days there are fewer and fewer complaints about Marta Karolyi.

The biggest left, in my opinion, is that she’s unwilling to send gymnasts to international meets where they have any chance at all of being underscored.

UPDATE: Commenters noted that The U.S. Universiade squad is selected by USIUSF (United States International University Sports Federation) who govern university sport. USAG may have very little input as to whether or not the USA attends.

Could the USA have challenged Russia at Universiade?

Gymnastike picked a (hypothetical) 2013 World University Games Dream Team:

Bridget Sloan
of Florida – All Around
Vanessa Zamarripa of UCLA – All Around
Jessie DeZiel of Nebraska – All Around
Kytra Hunter of Florida – VT, BB, FX
Mackenzie Caquatto of Florida – UB, BB

The oh-so-close Alternates:

Katherine Grable of Arkansas (VT, BB, FX, also capable of leading off on UB)
Georgia Dabritz of Utah (VT, UB, FX)
Brandie Jay of Georgia (VT, UB, possible FX)
Ashley Priess of Alabama (UB, BB)

Ksenia Afanasyeva – Floor

Vladimir Zaglada feels Afan might be ranked with the best Soviet / Russian Floor workers ever. High praise.

I don’t think I’d call her the second coming of Omelienchik, however. 🙂

Tumbling is VERY good, but not best in the world.

Choreography subtle and classy, but not out of the ordinary. Leap is clean.

The highlight for me are her turns.

That was linked from a nice wrap-up post by Bea GheorghisorSummer Universiade: Women’s All Around Report:

… The competition for the bronze medal was decided between Germany’s Kim Bui and Canada’s Elisabeth Black. Both very interesting but also very different gymnasts: Bui had to rely mostly on her execution scores rather than the difficulty of her routines while Elisabeth had the big tricks and was thus more prone to error. …

… the strategy of execution versus difficulty did win Bui the bronze medal: on floor, she was rewarded with a total of 13.50 while Elisabeth Black fell on her second pass, on a double tuck, and only received a 12.450 for her difficult routine (which includes a 2 1/2 to double full as first pass). …
