Trampoline history

LEIGH HENNESSY ROBSON:

Uploaded to the YouTube account of Samuel Castro is a video called “Trampoline Best Legends.” It’s been making the rounds on social media networks. There are many outstanding performances on the video, including clips of trampoline gymnasts at Cirque and on the winter slopes. I don’t know where he got all the clips and I’m not sure who all the performers are or where they are performing. However, I did bear witness to a few of the performances in person.

Galimbatoviski is the most talented gymnast you probably never heard of. At minute 2:25 is a clip of him performing an historic record-breaking routine, the first competition routine with 5 triples in a row, and the first with a rudi-out triffis. He performed two of them: rudi-out triff tuck, 1/2 in rudi-out triff tuck, triff pike, 1/2 in triff tuck, triff tuck – solid, on an ancient 1/4? bed. …

I did not witness Canada’s Jason Burnett perform his world-record DD routine of 17.7 in a 2007 World Cup, but his routine is included in this compilation of Trampoline greats at 5:30.

Road to Nationals vs Troester

I’ve not logged into the painfully antiquated Troester NCAA rankings all season. Road to Nationals (linked from the top of our home page) is far superior.

falling from heights

Before we put a child up high, we need teach them every possible way to land and fall from that height.

Some of the most important “skills” we teach young children are: safe climbing, safe landing, safe falling.

I find some coaches, in a rush, neglect getting new kids technically and psychologically ready prior to the first time they accidentally fall.

Bonaly backflip on skates

Formerly a competitive gymnast, Surya Bonaly is famous for her backflip landed on only one blade.

At the 1991 World Championships, she became the first and only female to attempt a quadruple toe loop jump. Her jump was not fully rotated in the air and she had to complete the rotation on the ice, making it a triple and not a quadruple. Bonaly was never credited with successfully landing the jump …

At the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan, Bonaly finished well out of reach of the gold medal following the short program. Believing she was unjustly scored, Bonaly decided to perform her back flip during the free skate to make a statement. The move, illegal in competition, caused a stir and resulted in a deduction but Bonaly was content with her decision. Bonaly then retired from amateur competition.

Bonaly toured with the Champions on Ice skating show for several years until it went out of business after 2007. She also performed in shows in Russia with Evgeni Plushenko and was a guest skater at Ice Theatre of New York’s December 2008 gala in NYC where she successfully performed her back flip. …
