Here’s McKayla Maroney.

Maroney block

A common coaching error is to emulate the best of the best. Just because it works for Maroney, doesn’t mean it’s going to work for you.

I don’t recommend wide arms with the hands out-turned for young, developing gymnasts. Stick with the most popular, traditional arm position (e.g. Cheng Fei) unless you have a very good reason not to.

Flip-A-Day Challenge

Pat Graves:

On January 1, 2014, I decided to embark on a journey that consisted of doing a flip of some sort every single day of the year. …

Pat Graves is the head tumbling coach at Mpact Sports in Brentwood, TN near Nashville.

On finishing his goal in 2014 he continued into 2015 and has yet to miss a day.

You can see EVERY flip day so far on Vine.

Pat:

My aim with this challenge was to inspire as many people as possible to do something they love every day, along with generating interest in gymnastics. I believe that It’s more than a sport–it’s an art form. Flipping and twisting is my happiness …

UCLA season high 197.35 on the road

UCLA hit 23 of 24 routines for 9.8 or better, including its first 16 routines. The Bruins also hit all three exhibition routines …

“I was really pleased with the fact that we have continued on the same path as we have in the last four weeks and that we keep getting better,” said UCLA head coach Valorie Kondos Field. “They’re working very determined in the gym and coming out and reaping the rewards of all their hard work. Even though we were resting some key people in certain events, to be able to do that and hit 23 of 24 – and actually, 26 of 27 routines – and to have our highest score of the season on the road was great. That was the plan – to be able to increase our RQS and, more importantly than that, to compete how we’ve been training.” …

Rio Olympic venues

The IOC vice-president who called Rio de Janeiro’s preparations for the 2016 Olympics the “worst” in memory, says almost a year later that much has changed.

John Coates, in Rio for meetings of the International Olympic Committee executive board, said on Thursday he’s feeling content about South America’s first Olympics.

“A lot of great progress has been made,” Coates said. “That’s quite clear. I’m a lot more relaxed.” …

Quite a bit of depth. I’m looking forward to seeing who ends up competing for Canada at Worlds 2015.

We’re hoping Heaven Latimer continues her comeback. She’s not competed the AA for some time.

“Up, Up Stations” for Vault

Doug Davis:

… The drills demonstrated in the video below will be useful for tumblers at most any level, and are very worthwhile for vaulters that hope to achieve higher levels. Start early tumblers moving skills up onto safe, soft surfaces (pit pillows, bear mats), from the beginning to build confidence. Work up toward higher and higher stations involving more rebound and correct shaping. …
