Assistant Illinois Coach Daniel Ribeiro and Head Coach Justin Spring have spent a lot of time dreaming up alternative competition formats that would make the sport more entertaining and understandable to the average fan.
Daniel Ribeiro posted one option on the NCAA MEN’S GYMNASTICS ALUMNI Facebook page – a 16 team bracket culminating in a Final 4 Championships. Here’s an example of how it could work.

I was at Championships and it was very difficult to follow 6 teams LIVE simultaneously and know who was where at any time during the meet. What I want is a separate results page with projected final team rankings based on a number of variables.

About the NAIGC:
The National Association of Intercollegiate Gymnastics Clubs (NAIGC) is dedicated to the promotion and support of collegiate and adult club gymnastics “for the love of the sport.” The NAIGC hosted its first annual national championships in 1989. In 2006, the NAIGC incorporated as a non-profit and elected its first Board of Directors. The NAIGC was recognized as a tax-exempt public charity in 2008.
Today, an elected Board of Directors, alongside its advisors, runs the NAIGC. Most of these dedicated volunteers are current and former college club gymnasts. The NAIGC hosts this annual national championship meet, as well as other gymnastics events throughout the year and supports its member clubs with a variety of technological and administrative services.
Club membership in the NAIGC is open to any collegiate and/or adult gymnastics club in the United States. Individual membership is open to anyone with an interest in club gymnastics. For more information, visit naigc.net.
Thursday, April 16: Practice Day. Three sessions: 10:30 a.m., 1:01 p.m. and 3:32 p.m. In the past it’s been open to the general public. I assume the same applies this year.
16 year old Hailey Strole has overcome all odds. After being diagnosed with a brain tumor and undergoing multiple operations, she has returned to gymnastics and is committed to continuing her dream of competing. Her life is far from what many would consider normal, but Hailey’s positive outlook has gotten her through the darkest of times. Watch her inspiring story now.
Over on the open-to-the-public NCAA MEN’S GYMNASTICS ALUMNI Facebook page, there’s some good discussion on how the Championships could be be improved in future.
Coach Sommer feels Men’s teams could do a better job online. Using social media.
I agree.
There are some GREAT stories in Men’s Gymnastics. The 2015 season for OU, for example.
The Sooners completed one of the greatest seasons in NCAA history with their ninth NCAA Team Championship, two NCAA Individual Event Champions and 14 All-Americans.
