Nina McGee – Floor

LSU’s Lloimincia Hall went O.B. on her last tumbling pass. Out of the Floor Final yet again. One of the most talked about Floor routines over the past 4 years never qualified to an NCAA Final 😦

Happily Nina McGee from Denver is in. I’d love to see her win. College Floor is all about audience appeal. Nina’s routine, like Mincie’s, is impossible not to watch. And Nina’s double layout is even better.

Click PLAY or watch Nina’s prelims routine on YouTube.

YouTube doesn’t reveal how well Nina relates to the crowd. NCAA Floor you must see in person to appreciate.

… finished with an all-around score of 39.375 … 11th overall, earning her Second-Team All-American honors. Her final tally is the highest ever for a Denver gymnast at the NCAA National Championships …

“We can’t be any more proud of Nina,” said head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart. “She hit four for four in her very first NCAA appearance, and we’re so pleased that she’s an all-around All-American.

no hands Beam routine

Recall that Nadia has a serious wrist infection at the 1979 World Championships in Fort Worth. But still competed Beam, taking out her Handstand mount and backward handspring series.

In 2012 Sam Peszek did a routine without touching tumbling with her hands on the Beam at all. Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

From the afternoon session only Stanford will be completely happy with the performance. Don’t be surprised to see the #11 seed reach the top 6. Stanford’s done this before. πŸ™‚

Stanford
Stanford

I felt rotten for Michigan. They were great. Truly deserving of a place in the Super 6. But Stanford was magic. I’m not sure I can recall a better Bar rotation at Nationals. 49.575 with 5/6 dismounts stuck, I believe. Oklahoma went 49.500 on Bars. But I’d still call the Cardinal performance significantly better today.

The evening competition was more exciting. And more heart breaking.

LSU had 3 falls on Beam. That’s game over. 😦 What a shame.

Oklahomathe team that never falls – had 2 falls on Beam. A shocker. But had enough of a lead to get through. I don’t believe the Sooners will fall in the Final. They are certainly the team to beat. Their only weakness is tumbling. Both Alabama and LSU are much better. Brenna Dowell helps for sure. Her double front was the best single tumbling line I saw today.

I love Nebraska. But tonight Auburn was not going to be denied. I enjoyed seeing Nebraska Head Coach Dan Kendig congratulating Jeff Graba, the Auburn coach, on qualifying. Two classy guys doing a great job with their teams.

This was only their 4th appearance at championships.
