Kids in Action Gymnastics

I dropped in to see coach Leonard Isaacs at his new club in Lake Barrington outside Chicago.

Owner Gary Griffin brought Leonard in to KIAGA – a gorgeous, clean 23,000 square foot facility only 3 years old.

Gary Leonard

Leonard Isaacs and Bill Sands were the first Elite American coaches I ever followed. They coached together in Chicago a … few years ago. 🙂

Both are still two of the gurus that influence me most as a coach.

Leonard is an advisor and consultant to Tumbl Trak, coming up with new innovations to make Gymnastics training safer. This time he showed me a series of non-spotting progressions for teaching high to low “Bail” handstand on Bars. That video will be released soon.

Here’s a background article on Kids in Action – KIAGA’s Coach Gary.

update on Gymnastics in the Philippines

The Philippines has finally ended a 10-year gold medal drought in gymnastics at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) president Cynthia Carrion said yesterday the breakthrough came through the efforts of a homegrown athlete who did the country proud in Singapore.

Reyland Capellan, 21, captured the gold medal in the floor event and added a bronze in the vault at the recently concluded SEA Games. Fil-Am Ava Verdeflor, 19, delivered a silver in the uneven bars and led the women’s team to a bronze. The harvest was a far cry from the single gymnastics bronze that the Philippines took at the 2011 SEA Games in Indonesia, courtesy of John Nathan Monteclaro in the rings. Before Capellan’s feat, the Philippines’ last gold medal in gymnastics came from Roel Ramirez in the vault in 2005. …

40th birthday Gymnastics celebration

Scott Chandler will take to the gymnastics mats just one more time, a day after his 40th birthday and three decades after first appearing in competition.

He’s even organized his own event so he can say he competed into his forties.

“I’m the only guy out there that’s losing his hair I can tell you that,” Chandler said with a laugh, “and the only guy out there that doesn’t have an eight-pack under his tights.” …

farewell 40

It’s also the 40th birthday of someone named Oksana.

Unlike Scott, she’s no quitter. 🙂

Québec gymnast Félix Dolci

The most talked about male Canadian gymnast this past season was too young to be allowed to compete at the Canadian Championships.

He was barely old enough for the Canada Winter Games finishing 2nd AA against most of the best of the rest in the country.

Click PLAY or watch a highlights reel on YouTube.

Félix was one of our demonstrators at the coaching course following Nationals. Turns out he’s a normal kid. Fun loving. Of his many talents I was most impressed by aerial awareness. For example, for fun he did on Rings: Backward uprise to support, Koste (back salto) from support with triple twist.

Legacy Elite had a great season. Their best ever, I believe.
