GymnasticsPlanet.co.uk – Rings

A new Men’s Artistic Gymnastics blog from Adam Paterson (Dynamo School of Gymnastics) and Lee Woolls (City of Birmingham Gymnastics Club).

The latest news, gossip from the World of Gymnastics!

Here’s a sample video tutorial from Lee. Teaching Ring swing. (using straps or — as Lee would call them — “loops”)

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube. (12min)

The goal is to swing to invert cross position as efficiently as possible. The kids need learn to keep the shoulders low.

See the interesting trench pit at 7min 30sec.

Great stuff. Exactly what Edouard Iarov, former Men’s National Coach of Canada, recommends. Delay the gymnasts going for handstand until they are able to keep arms relatively straight.

This site is must follow for all serious MAG coaches. Both coaches are on twitter.

Of course there have been World and Olympic champions who did not wear grips. But it’s quite unusual in NCAA Gymnastics 2012.

Thanks Greg.

Some are freaking out.

That’s dopey. Not much is changing. Here’s a much more measured assessment:

Read Write Web – Tech World Overreacts to Google’s New Privacy Policy – How Does It Affect You?

… You know what you can do? Stop sharing things you don’t want tracked. …

Before and after March 1st best advice is not to do anything online you’ll regret in future. Somebody, somewhere could be tracking it. And it probably won’t be Google. They’re one of the least evil players.

If you want to dig into this deeper, the best authority is Jeff Jarvis. He’s the author of:

On Gymnastike, Anne commented on some NCAA schools using a 3rd party service called Varsity Monitor to follow their team online.

They flag “questionable conduct“.

That’s a bit scary. But I suspect Universities are mainly worried about what their high profile basketball and football players say. Gymnasts are probably the least of their worries.

new MAG skills

FIG MTC has officially announced new skills and old skills now “named” on this document (PDF)

From that PDF on your computer you can click on links to watch “unlisted” YouTube videos of the skill. Those are private to you.

Actually, it might be possible to embed the video IF you use the “unlisted” URL. Can you watch this?

That’s now the “Penev”. Seems you can competed both the Penev and double layout with 1/1 twist in the same routine.

Leave a comment if you’ve an opinion on the new list. Personally I’m disappointed to see YAMAWAKI 1/2 STRETCHED TO MIXED GRIP INTO BACK UPRISE TO HANDSTAND (MUNOZ) be awarded an E-part. Over-used, layout Yamawaki and variations should be devalued. And still might be, next Code.

Why are they so unsupportive of Rhythmic Gymnastics?
Funding was cut in 2009. She has a volunteer coach.

The good news — an anonymous donor, after seeing her situation on TV, sent a cheque to support Frankie‘s training.

FIG landing mats are not safe for this level of trick. We need something more like the Double-mini landing surface.

Much less razzle dazzle than Beijing. But they look to be well on schedule.

I saw that on her post describing the official tour of the Olympic Park.
