USAG Global Ambassadors

Good news out of Cancun.

USA Gymnastics announced today that it is committing $100,000 during the next three years toward a Global Ambassador Program designed to assist countries with the development of gymnastics worldwide.

In partnership with the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC), AAI and the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), USA Gymnastics will provide its athletes and coaches as consultants on a request basis to countries to stimulate the growth of the sport and athlete development at many levels. …

“This is a perfect example of how countries can share their expertise in the interest of global development,” commented FIG President Bruno Grandi. “The FIG is grateful for USA Gymnastics’ leadership with this program, and we look forward to the impact it can have around the world.” …

USA Gymnastics and the FIG will identify qualified countries annually in the years 2013-15, with specific criteria and information on the request process available to the countries beginning in January 2013.

WAG Routines iPad app

Due to strong demand, Arjen Butter’s launched an iPad app for WAG ($3.99) to accompany his MAG app.

Features:

• up to 24 Users (gymnasts)
• as many routines as you wish for each
• browse the Code of Points
• click on elements in the Code;
~ Let an element zoom out to see it more clear
~ Add the element in your routine
• Within your routine change positions of elements
• Drag elements out of your routine to delete them

The WAG version is similar to the MAG, but it has a couple of extras:

– a notebook on the routines you post
– PDF files with extra information from FIG

It’s pretty much finished, but updates are in the works as Arjen gets feedback from users.

Download it from iTunes ($3.99 or 2,99 €)

coach in Canada

The economy is good in the Great White North. Gyms are full.

In fact most of the socialist democracies are doing well economically. Denmark, Finland and the Netherlands ranked happiest in a recent report by the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development. Canadians are generally happy, too. 🙂

The past week I’ve been a guest coach at Taiso Gymnastics, Saskatoon, one of the top Men’s Artistic clubs in the country. Taiso has a full-time position available working alongside Head Coach Markos Baikos with National and International competitors.

Markos has dozens of good kids including international Seniors Jayd Lukenchuk and Anderson Loran. But he needs help. Email office (a) taiso.ca if you might be interested in a job.

The club is HIRING. 🙂 This is a terrific opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a fast rising elevator.

And it’s a for profit business — not a “non-profit Society”. A big plus for those coaches frustrated working for a volunteer Board of parents.

FIG Congress – Cancun

UEG:

… The General Assembly itself will start on Thursday, October 25. Some 450 delegates representing 116 of the 131 national member federations of the FIG are expected in Mexico.

This Congress is particularly important because all FIG authorities will be renewed. These elections concern as well the UEG as there are 62 European candidates for various positions. For the position of the FIG President, 3 candidates are running, all three Europeans. …

• Bruno Grandi (Italy)
• MTC president Adrian Stoica (Romania)
• banker Vassily Titov (Russia)

Grandi is the favourite.

TAA:

… The FIG has seven Technical Committees – Gymnastics for All, Men’s, Women’s, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Trampoline, Aerobics and Acrobatic. Each Technical Committee consists of a president and six members. Three will see new presidents. Five of the seven candidates for president are running unopposed. …

The Men’s Technical Committee and the Rhythmic Gymnastics Technical Committee will actually see a real battle – Adrian Stoica is being challenged by Steven Butcher (USA). Interestingly enough, Stoica is not a candidate for a member position.

Natlia Kuzmina (Russia) and Danielle Delle Chiaie (Italy) are going head-to-head for the presidency of the Rhythmic Gymnastics. …

Jordyn Wieber’s Olympics

In a Couch Gymnast London Olympics Awards post, Jordyn was picked for a ‘Tear-jerker’ Moment of the Games.

And also for the ‘Sportswoman Award’, for demonstrating sportsmanship throughout the meet. And contributing brilliantly to her team effort after personal disappointment.

Arabian Punch Front posted a number of Jordyn Wieber montages. Including this one.

… It captures the heartbreaking emotions of the All Around final and, at the same time, shows how strong of an athlete Jordyn is, physically and mentally, to perform so well for her team the next day. …
