Michigan won the Cancun Classic with an impressive score of 196.575.
Michigan Head Coach Bev Plocki:
On the team’s performance … “We hit 27 for 27 routines, which was all of our six up plus exhibitions. There weren’t many misses on the whole. I am really excited. I have known we had a really good fall of training. I felt like we were prepared coming in.
Stanford opened the year with 195.425.
The Balance Beam Situation:
First final of 2013: Florida 196.575, Ball State 190.500 …
Bridget Sloan debuts with a 9.925 vault …
… Oregon State is having another nutty on bars, counting a fall, a major mistake, and two other scores well under 9.800. Did I say mid-194s? I meant 193s. Something like 193.600 will be the final. That is an extremely poor result, even for the first week. Teams can come back from this kind of start (Stanford did last year), but this is dire for the Beavers. I don’t expect this to continue in the same level of badness, but the Beavers are verging on not being one of the top 12 teams, certainly. Not making Nationals is a very real concern. …
LSU beats NC State 196.075-194.975!
The Tigers clinch D-D Breaux’s 600th career victory! The 196.075 is also a school record for a season opener!”
Savona had a good debeaux — 9.85 vault, 9.80 beam and 9.925 floor.

I first fell in love with Aliya Mustafina at the 2010 Worlds. She was dominant. Confident. Yet media shy. Dashing away from the press areas as quickly as possible.
I loved her comeback too.
What a psychological case study. Intriguing.
But in the ranks of best gymnasts all time, Aliya has plenty of weaknesses. Especially form. I use her and Nastia as examples of how NOT to teach young gymnasts to twist.
