GymCastic – Sho Nakamori

This week we chat with one of our favorite gymnasts, Sho Nakamori. He made the national team at 12 and lived through both personal tragedies and injuries more common in car accidents than gymnastics, before reaching his peak.

His experiences as a gymnast, the son of Japanese gymnasts and a grassroots contributor to the community have always fascinated us. He proved to be as much of a renaissance man as we had imagined!

No doubt he’s already tested prototypes on the Gymnastics apparatus. 🙂

And Sho’s a judge. Look for him on Pommels at J.O. Nationals. … He’ll be the one wearing the odd looking glasses. 🙂

workout with Oklahoma Men

This week’s gymnastics workout video takes you inside an early morning training session with the University of Oklahoma men’s gymnastics team. This past weekend, the Sooners upset #2 ranked Michigan on the road. They will once again be in the hunt for the NCAA National title come April.

Kentucky’s Tim Garrison

Tim‘s yet another of the former Nebraska assistant‘s who’s gone on to be one of the best Head Coaches in the NCAA.

… And he was gutsy enough to put on a wire for a competition. 🙂

The Kentucky gymnastics team is having one of the best seasons in school history. Heading into a Senior Night meet against Bowling Green on Friday at 7 p.m. ET, the Wildcats are looking to build off of a 196.5 team score – the highest ever for the program. The video below gives you an idea of the kind of leadership Tim Garrison has brought to UK.

Driggs with a 1/2 – Pommel

Update – Commenters tell that “FIG MTC gave him only a D”. I assume that’s not official, as yet.

Coaching Methods:

… very similar to the Driggs (3/3 cross support travel fwd. with hop over both sets of Pommels). Given that the Driggs is worth an E, I guess this should be an F.

Kohei not impressed

It doesn’t quite work, however. Maroney fell on her second Vault. Kohei did not compete two vaults.

One-on-one, the girl beat the boy.

Kohei’s the better “lander”, of course. One of the best that ever lived. We should study his technique.
