when general Sports reporters cover Gymnastics

Actually, this is the first bit of hilariously wrong media coverage I’ve seen.

Leave a comment if you have seen anything else like this.

Uncle Tim’s predictions …

Uncle Tim Talks Men’s Gym2013 Worlds: Introducing the Peloton of the Men’s All-Around

Ono is here in Belgium.

She thinks Hambüchen is ranked too low, Oleg too high.

The Chinese guys are consistent, I’ll give them that. Kato too.

Just to keep the conversation lively, I’ll go for the entertainers:

2. Mikulak
3. Hambüchen (hits Pommels for 13.70)

London 2012 - Turnen

4. Zhou Shixiong, China
5. Ryohei Kato, Japan

Carlotta FERLITO – Beam

14.216 = D score : 6.20, E score : 8.016

@theallaround:

BB qualifiers 1.Iordache, 2.Shang, 3.Ross, 4.Rodionova, 5.Biles, 6.Ferrari, 7.Ferlitto, 8.Mustafina

Mustafina? … That’s a crime.

Who was knocked out of the Beam final due to incompetent E-panel judging?

Oh. Only Yao Jinnan, one of the best two Beam routines in the competition. Sob. 😦

Yamilet PENA ABREU – Vault

I’d like know Michel Léglise’s opinion of a set of Judging rules that rewards this kind of performance with qualification to a World Championships Final.

He’s Head of FIG Medical Commission.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

1st Vault : 14.900 (D score : 7.0, E score : 7,90), 2nd Vault : 14.466 (D score : 5.80, E score : 8.666). Average : 14.683.

Obviously 1.0 is not a big enough penalty on Vault. It would need to be 2.0 or higher to stop gymnasts from chucking it with or without a fall.

@theallaround:

Vault qualifiers 1.Maroney, 2.Biles, 3.Hong, 4.Phan, 5.Steingruber, 6.Chusovitina, 7.Peña, 8.Netteb

Fadwa Mahmoud from Egypt also competed the double front Vault. Similar landing position. But no fall. Better, but still dangerous.

Rebecca DOWNIE – Bars

Crazy and crazy difficult.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

The British girls are super creative on Bars.

@theallaround:

UB qualifiers 1.Yao, 2.Ross, 3.Huang, 4.Downie, 5.Mustafina, 6.Biles, 7.Harrold, 8.Scheder,

Sandra IZBASA – Floor

Gorgeous, as always.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

14.733 = D score : 6.20, E score : 8.533

Provisory 2nd best score in Floor, behind Simone Biles (15.033).

Sadly, Victoria Moors fell on her new double double layout. Won’t qualify for the FX Final.

@theallaround:

FX qualifiers 1.Biles, 2.Izbasa, 3.Iordache, 4.Ferrari, 5.Murakami, 6.Ross, (Maroney), 7.Steingruber, 8.Black

Ruby HARROLD – Bars

At the 2013 Europeans, the all-around final Ruby finished 8th with a total score of 54.633, becoming the first British woman ever to produce a top-10 performance in an all-around European Championships final. …

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

14.600 = D score : 6.30, E score : 8.300

hmm ..

Because I like the originality, I’ll shaddup on this E score.

@theallaround:

Provisional results after 4 subdivisions UB: 1.Yao, 2.Ross, 3.Huang, 4.Mustafina, 5.Biles, 6.Harrold, 7.Scheder, 8.Nabieva

Noemi MAKRA – Floor

With one flight left to go: 1.Biles, 2.Iordache, 3.Ferrari, 4.Murakami, 5.Ross, 6.Maroney, 7.Black, 8.Makra

Keep your fingers crossed for tiny Noemi from Hungary.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

The judges deliberated long before awarding:

13.966 = D score : 6.0, E score : 7.966

the FERRARI – Floor

Not Vanessa’s best routine. Yet.

But I’m happy to see her back in the Floor Final at Worlds. The same final she deserved to win in 2010.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

Floor : 14.500 = D score : 6.30, E score : 8.20

I’d almost credit that back tuck as connected.

how split is Ponor?

#WChAntwerp

Not many human beings can consistently, accurately assess multiple angles like this from where judges are seated.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

I have not much faith in the Execution panels at Worlds.

They are guessing.

Computer assistance is easily and inexpensively available.

FIG should be piloting studies on how this could be implemented. Rhythmic needs it most.
