Ukrainian star Oleg Vernyayev won his third all-around title in as many weeks, winning the 18th Valeri Liukin Invitational on Saturday in Frisco, Texas.
After inconsistent performances throughout 2013, Vernyayev has now ended the year with a streak of success. He won the DTB World Cup on Dec. 1, the Glasgow World Cup on Dec. 7, and he followed the World Cup victories with another first place finish in Frisco.
Vernyayev scored 92.100 to win the event over Japanese junior Wataru Tanigawa and U.S. Olympian Danell Leyva (88.200). …
The three-day competition includes hundreds of male gymnasts competing from level 6 to elite.

Much as it was a joy to see Anna Pavlova in competition again, and for the first time representing Azerbaijan, the most exciting stories of the 2013 Voronin Cup were found in the junior division.
The Russian juniors were dominant in general at this competition, taking the first four all-around spots as well as sixth place. However, one particular training group stood out from the rest. …
Darya Mikhaylova and Raisa Batyrova, both of whom will turn senior in 2015, stole the show at Voronin, and as a consequence, the skill of their shared coaches was the big takeaway fom the event. For those of you who don’t know, Mikhaylova and Batyrova train under the Razumovskys, Irina and Viktor, at CSKA Moscow, in the newly constituted group that includes Olympic team member Nastya Grishina. …

Will FIG truly start rewarding artistry more?
If not, I don’t see how the Russian Juniors, when Senior, will be able to compete against the USA in future. Their start scores will be too low.

Southern Utah University gymnastics has announced a new gymnastics alliance, joining Utah State, Boise State, Denver and Brigham Young in the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Championship. The group will look at becoming the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference in 2014-15 when the league is anticipated to be fully recognized by the NCAA. …
