Simone Biles improving

Winning the first Worlds of the quadrennial does not mean you’re going to be there at the Olympics 3 long years later.

Simone is still improving, however. Lots of potential to raise D scores.

Doctors haven’t declared Souza paralysed, but admit there’s a possibility of permanent damage.

“She dislocated a vertebrae near the top of her spine,” said Dr. Andrew Dailey, a neurosurgeon with University of Utah Health Care. …

Ellie Black in PEI

Sharon Gareau via email:

… shout out to Ellie Black who was at our meet this weekend — the Prince Edward Classic in Charlottetown — to demo new routines. …

She was ever so charming and gracious with all the young athletes, signing autographs and posing for pics all day. Her gymnastics was amazing as always. Great meet all around, largest of it’s kind east of Montreal. Close to 500 athletes, all 4 Atlantic Provinces. Eat, sleep, compete all under one roof — perfect for freezing January. 🙂

This skill is now known as the “Mo Salto” in the Code of Points, and is classified as a “G” element.

Only a handful of other women gymnasts have attempted and successfully completed the Mo Salto. In fact, the only women gymnasts who have performed the Mo Salto at international competitions are all from China, including Meng Fei and Bi Wenjing. In 2005 World Championships, Chinese athlete Zhang Yufei performed it successfully in podium training. …

Yao Jinnan is currently competing it, of course.

I’m not a big fan of the Mo salto myself.

Note that men are no longer competing the Gaylord 1.

____

The Gaylord 2 variation has more potential for swing, in my opinion.
