Acrobatic Tumbling Toy

This is a beautiful hand-made, hand-painted wooden toy, made in Germany. The little wooden figure performs a series of back-flips as he descends down the steps.

Automata like this have a history going back over 200 years, when mechanical toys were collected by rich and famous people. …

Recently, a traditional German toymaker has re-invented the toy, with a different, patented, mechanism that uses weights and levers, instead of mercury.

Emily Wong’s success comes from her great balance. But after a practice last fall, the NU senior almost lost her footing when she found out her dad, John, had suffered a stroke.

Less than a day later, Emily had flown home to North Dakota to be by her dad’s side.

“It meant the world,” said Wong. “He wasn’t fully conscious when I got there but you could still talk. It was nice to have conversations with him. I probably didn’t sleep for three or four days just going back to talk for hours. So it was definitely nice.”

John was able to see Emily’s sister get married in the hospital. He then died on October 4th. …

Gilmore Junio – team player

Winter Olympics.

Gilmore Junio of Calgary has given up his spot in Wednesday’s 1000-metre speed skating race to his teammate Denny Morrison.

In a press release from the Canadian Olympic Committee, 23-year-old Junio said he made the decision because it would improve Canada’s medal chances.

Denny has proven to be a consistent medal threat in the distance”.
