Olympic Test Events in April

Gymnastics Canada via email:

FIG PRESS RELEASE

… published by the FIG Executive Committee at the close of its ordinary meeting, May 07- 08, 2014, in Kuwait City (KUW) …

* The second Olympic qualification will be held at the Test Events in Rio de Janeiro (BRA), from April 16 – 24, 2016.

Recall that the London Test Events were in early January 2012. Bad timing, so close to Christmas and New Years, for many of the athletes.

April is better. Overall. But finding out so late whether or not your nation qualified for the Olympics is going to be even more stressful than it was in 2012.

$300,000 for Collegiate Gym

Good news.

At its recent meeting, the National Gymnastics Foundation allocated up to $300,000 during a three-year period to be devoted to strengthening men’s and women’s collegiate gymnastics at the varsity level. …

The NGF Board identified three objectives for this effort: to support the growth of men’s and women’s NCAA varsity programs; to assist endowment initiatives at men’s and women’s NCAA varsity programs; and to provide grants for NCAA gymnastics programs as requested from either the NCAA or its member institutions. …

I still prefer this MONSTER launched by the great Charlie Tamayo.

In response to Uncle Tim asking if ANYONE can do a proper Yamawaki, Will Banthorpe responds with this link.

I generally consider Charlie and Kohei the most “talented” two gymnasts all-time.

learning backhandspring to set

Another good tip from Nick Blanton.

I like, on Tramp, backward handspring to forward somersault.

Be careful not to aggravate Achilles on any of these drills, of course.

straight elbows on Rings

I recall Edouard Iarov in 1994 explaining that beginners should do 2/3 of arm work bent, only 1/3 straight.

Why?

They need to develop strength across the elbow joint before putting too much load on the straight arm.

Gymnastic Bodies Chris Sommers goes into the specifics.

Coach Sommer:

The elbows and biceps need to be gradually prepared prior to beginning strenuous iron cross training. …

Russia’s Europeans Team

Update from Queen E:

Mustafina may compete 3 events at Euros. Bars and beam for sure, but she might also do floor. The other girls’ specialist events are:

Kharenkova: beam, floor
Spiridonova: bars, beam
Rodionova: bars
Sosnitskaya: vault, floor

It’s unclear who else will be doing vault and who the third girl for floor would be in Mustafina’s absence from this piece”

Ukraine is going to Europeans

Good news.

Mariya Livchikova:

I can write to now confirm that the athletes have secured the funding to go to the European Championship

Thanks Alan.

Update from Amanda Turner:

Igor Korobchinsky, vice president of the Ukrainian Gymnastics Federation, said Wednesday the FIG had promised to assist the federation with an interest-free loan to cover its costs and expenses. The 2014 Europeans, which begin Monday, serves as a qualifying competition for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games and 2015 European Games.

Korobchinsky was among several gymnastics officials and coaches who gathered for a press conference Wednesday called “The Crisis in Ukrainian Sports.” The team needs a long-term solution for funding its program, they said.

Women’s coach Oksana Slyusarchuk described the national training center as in a terrible state of disrepair, with only one gym to accommodate the junior and senior national teams for both men and women.

Igor Radivilov, a bronze medalist on vault at the 2012 Olympics and the 2013 co-European champion on still rings, said the equipment is unsafe. …
