Secret podium training

Gymnastike mostly skipped covering Commonwealths. But they are locked and loaded for the 2014 Secret Classic.

I like Brenna’s Shaposh to Giant 1/1.

Bloggers are listing the number of original competitors scratched due to injury, most recently Lexie Priessman, injured on Beam dismount during podium. This is a dangerous sport.

Some will be back for Championships.

Claudia Fragapane – Floor

Had Victoria Moors been competition ready, I don’t think she could have finished ahead of this routine.

This is almost certainly the top routine in the world right now.

The choreography in the near corner is fantastic, of course. But we should show her sprint in the first tumble to our gymnasts.

Claudia is a little shorter than Shawn Johnson at the same age. And possibly even more powerful.

Gabby training at Buckeye

Nancy Armour:

Douglas began training at Buckeye Gymnastics in Columbus, Ohio, last week, after leaving coach Liang Chow for the second time since winning gold at the London Olympics. Douglas had returned to Chow’s gym in West Des Moines in April, eight months after leaving to be closer to her family in Los Angeles.

“Time will tell,” Karolyi, coordinator of the women’s national team, said Friday when asked about the move. “I’m not crazy about lots of changes. I like stability …

She is not competing at this weekend’s U.S. Classic, a qualifier for the national championships later this month, and she won’t petition for the world team selection camp, said Kittia Carpenter, who is in charge of Buckeye’s elite program. …

Olympics 25x more important than Commonwealths

If you are not from a Commonwealth nation, you might be dumbstruck at how important we fans consider the Commonwealth Games.

You’d be right.

All multi-sport Games pitting huge, rich nations against tiny, poor ones are stupid. And Commonwealths are as stupid as any.

The Olympics are, obviously, far more important.

The savvy number crunchers in Singapore have a formula:

… Their policy is $1,000,000 for Olympic Games gold (medal) and $40,000 for Commonwealth gold – a 25-fold difference. Asian Games are ranked five-fold more valuable than Commonwealth Gold …

That’s about right.

Still, I love Commonwealths. And I’m already looking forward to 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast City, Queensland, Australia.

related – some paid journalist for the Hindu Times wrote “the programme for Gold Coast 2018 already locked and basketball set to replace gymnastics“.

Wrong. Basketball will replace Judo for 2018. Artistic and Rhythmic are in.

The Aussies love sport. That’s going to be a great event.

For 2022 it will be or Durban, South Africa or Edmonton, Canada (again). I volunteered at the 1978 Edmonton Games. 🙂

safe spotting DVD – basic tumbling

My friend Kyle Thalman, a coach in Hawaii, has done a great job putting together a new spotting video. High production values. Great video quality.

Here’s a sample.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

My philosophy is that coaches should know how to spot. Then spot as little as possible, setting up progressions that kids can do on their own.
