Dr. Dave Tilley:

… Many coaches were once athletes and may have had pre-existing shoulder issues themselves.

Certain spotting positions and habits might be a contributing factor for the risk for shoulder injuries …

There are some ways to combat the risks mentioned above through education and preventative rehabilitation (using rehabilitation techniques before an injury occurs) …

Thinking Point #1: Only Using One “good side” To Spot Skills

Thinking Point #2: Spotting skills with too much distance between you and the gymnast

World Championships Glasgow – FIG WTC Report

It’s well worth clicking over to read the Judging summary report from Nellie KIM. The good ladies of the FIG did a better job than at any previous Worlds in my opinion. 🙂

A suggestion for the future competition is to have a “moving” camera on Vault, in order to produce
better videos including the running and the best view of the vault itself. …

For the first time in the training halls, warm up hall, and during podium training … gymnasts had the possibility to use an additional 10 cm soft mat on FX, and a 30 cm “crash mat” on VT. …

Instead of a rotation between two teams, it might be a good idea to rotate gymnasts (e.g if there are two teams AUS and JPN then the rotation should be AUS/JPN/AUS/JPN and so on). …

Installation of the Podium in the “Warm up” Hall helped the gymnasts a greatly in the preparation to the competitions. …

problem with USA J.O. compulsories

Much of Canada is adopting the American program. I love it. Overall it’s far better than the hodge podge of ever changing rules Canadian girls have had in the past.

One big downside!

Tony Retrosi:

… USAG compulsory program. The average age of the Level 3’s in most gyms is 8 years old. If they do 1 level per year

Level 4 – 9
Level 5 – 10
Level 6 – 11
Level 7 – 12
Level 8 – 13
Level 9 – 14
Level 10- 15

You are simply going to run out of time. How can you take the USAG system and use it to the benefit of most gymnasts and certainly for the more talented gymnasts? …

Your training plan should be independent of any set of judging rules.

connecting backward handsprings

Best practice is not to rush. Wait until the single handspring is very consistent before connecting two.

If the gymnast is ready you’ll not need to spot many. Use drills like these posted by Nick Blanton.
