The Gymnastics Federation of Mongolia hosted this Olympic Solidarity Course/FIG Academy on November 3-10, 2014. By hosting this Academy, Mongolia became the 60th FIG member federation to host an Academy. … in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar. …
20 MAG and 25 WAG coaches. Now that’s impressive.
Dvora Meyers in 2012 posted an interesting and entertaining article on the history of Women’s Gymnastics:
… I spoke with Laddie Bakanic, 88, who had been a member of the 1948 U.S. women’s gymnastics team that won a team bronze medal at the Olympics and performed on the “flying rings” as they were known in her day.
“When I was on the flying rings and I had to leave go I was scared cause there was nothing there but a cotton mat on the ground,” she recalled, adding that there were male spotters hovering nearby just in case. …
Female Gymnasts Used to Compete on the Rings, But the Game Changed
Late 1970s at Santa Monica Gymfest in California, girls and guys were still training the long defunct Swinging Rings.
And Rings is NOT at all the only historical surprise. Here’s Olympic medalist and USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame artistic gymnast Clara Schroth Lomady, Captain of the 1948 U.S. Women’s Team. On the Parallel Bars.

Very few can agree on what’s artistry. But pretty much everyone can agree on what’s not. 🙂

Male gymnasts are, as a group, far more skilled at landing.
That’s partly strength. Partly technique.

Compare Uchimura’s soft-as-a-cat landing to this surprisingly typical WAG landing.

What Aliya did on that Beam dismount was to “punch’ on landing, instead of bringing impact forces to zero. She had no controlled landing. WAG judges are far too lenient on landing deductions (aside from the stupid ‘chest low’ rule). WAG gives very little reward to excellent landings.
Dr. George advises the gymnast see the landing as soon as possible. Reduce forces to zero by absorbing over time and distance.
USA WAG has added a 0.1 “stick” bonus for 2014. Let’s see if that helps. Gummi points out that the stick bonus may also result in more injuries in competition, especially on twisting landings like Amanar.

Here is Aliya landing that dismount in the Olympics. Quite a bit better.

The 2014 edition was a big success. Especially for the hosts.
With seven titles apiece, Russia and the host country United States were the most successful nations at the World Age Group competitions, which began just after the 30th edition of the World Trampoline Gymnastics Championships ended.
FIG – 32 new champions crowned as FIG Trampoline World Age Group competitions draw to a close
Catherine Tracy from UBC Gymnastics in Vancouver posted the best online coverage I saw. Here’s her wrap-up of the “WAG” competition.
