Vanessa Atler on USAG

Vanessa:

I am proud of USAG. I feel they have come a long way. Girls look happier. And that’s what I go by.

I feel like every four years you watch gymnasts on TV and they look more and more like real people. Less timid, more outgoing, they have more of a voice. They are more of a team.

Now don’t get me wrong, girls will be devastated and go through very rough times as elites, but it comes along with the sport. I think there can be more help for those that feel they have failed but I think that help is right around the corner. …

Vanessa is today Head Coach of the girls’ team at American Kids Sports Center in Bakersfield, California. And the author of this book. 🙂

… earned her third all-around title at the world championships, making her the first female ever to dominate so handily. (She’s won 10 world championship medals in three years.) Perhaps the most amazing part of all? A lot of people still don’t know her name.

That’ll surely change when she hits the beam — and mat and vault — at the 2016 Rio Games, where her biggest competition will likely be teammate Gabby Douglas, the 2012 all-around gold medalist.

I can look to others who’ve been there before.

My best friend and London Olympic teammate Jordyn Wieber went through a similar situation at the Olympics in 2012. Jordyn didn’t have the greatest day in qualification, didn’t make the all-around final, and then had to pick herself up like nothing had happened because she needed to perform well in the team final. …
