You started out in women’s gymnastics and then made the switch to men’s club at MIT. When and why did you make the switch from the balance beam to the rings?

I made the switch to men’s gymnastics after NAIGC Nationals in the spring of 2012. There were several reasons that I decided to switch. The MIT team only sent two male gymnasts to Nationals that year, and it seemed like the team was disappearing (like so many men’s programs these days), so I wanted to help keep it going.

I was also craving a new challenge. Women’s gymnastics at the NAIGC club level uses Level 9 rules [which are less demanding than varsity-level gymnastics rules], so my routines were very watered-down so that I could be super-clean and score well … In men’s gymnastics, I was able to go back to the basics and learn so many new things just from the other people on the team. In women’s gymnastics, I could maybe learn one new skill per year, but in men’s I was learning new skills all the time. …

Louis Smith and friends will climb the height of Everest, 8848 metres, in rope climbs as a fundraiser for Rotary Club of Huntingdon. They hope to raise at least £1,000 towards earthquake relief.

Around 10,700 athletes competed at the London Olympics. (5,992 men, 4,776 women)

There were 26 sports.

That’s an average of about 411 / sport.

Artistic, Rhythmic and Trampoline Gymnastics are allocated 312 spots by IOC. (98 MAG, 98 WAG, 84 Rhythmic and 32 spots for Trampoline)

One thing EVERYONE agrees on is that Gymnastics gets too few spots considering FIG’s IOC status.

Only Athletics is ranked higher. Gymnastics and Swimming are second ahead of Basketball, Cycling, Soccer, Tennis and Volleyball.

Gymnastics TV ratings are amongst the highest at the Summer Olympics. We have some GREAT stories.

FIG must continue to petition IOC to add athletes. If it was up to me, I’d move some of the Summer Games sports to the Winter Olympics to make more space. In fact, I wouldn’t mind Gymnastics being moved to the Winter Olympics in exchange for adding another hundred athletes.

Celebrating the announcement, Laís, her coach and teammate Josi Santos, another gymnast, went skiing. On a black diamond run, Laís somehow fell into the trees.

She was paralyzed. 😦

I love Acrobatic Gymnastics. Acro in the States has really improved over the past 10 years.

2014 World bronze medalists Kiley Boynton and Ryan Ward both of Riverside, Calif./Realis, won their second straight International Gymnastics Federation World Cup mixed pair gold medal today at the Geneva World Cup in Geneva, Switzerland. With the win in Switzerland, the pair also claimed the mixed pair World Cup series title. …
