Gymnastics Canada:
Competition is expected to be fierce at the 2015 Canadian Artistic Gymnastics Championships May 28-31 as Canada’s top competitors battle for a coveted berth this summer at the first Pan American Games to be held in Canada since 1999.
Over 500 gymnasts from across the country are set to challenge for titles in age groups ranging from novice to senior, but the men’s and women’s senior competitions are expected to be the highlight …
Canada’s top two contenders for a spot on the women’s team are two-time Canadian champion Ellie Black of Halifax, N.S., and 2014 world championship team member Isabela Onyshko of Minnedosa, Man …
In the men’s competition, veterans Scott Morgan of Vancouver, B.C., Kevin Lytwyn of Stoney Creek, Ont., and Jackson Payne of Edmonton, Alta. are the top contenders.
“I expect Scott and Kevin to be key components of the Pan Am team and I’m also expecting some big things from Jackson,” says men’s national team director Tony Smith of Calgary.
“After that it’s going to get really interesting …

As you probably guessed, Vladimir Georgievsky has been performing since age-11 and was a Moscow State Circus star.
He did move on to the next round.
Thanks Aidan.

The very best reason to teach young beginners sole (“Monkey Circles”) in series is for grip change. With high repetition they get very good at it long before they need to use the same grip change for Giants.
In 2013 Mark Folger posted a nice series of drills leading up to using a Stalder circle on low Bar.

Kohei Uchimura (and especially those chasing him) may have a bit more competition in Glasgow from an unexpected place – Cuba. Manrique Larduet … competed in all six events for a cumulative D score of close to 39 – which puts him squarely in contention for a podium spot in Glasgow if he hits. …

Not Kohei Uchimura. Not yet. But considering how little international experience Manrique has, we can anticipate him getting BETTER. 🙂

It’s charmingly low tech. Retro-futuristic.
I was won over by the first act featuring juggling and percussion. Yes juggling! What a terrific act.
The drums were great too. As a big fan of the Swiss Top Secret Drum Corp (VIDEO), I’ve always wanted Cirque to use more drummers.
Russian Cradle Duo. Aerial Bike. Excellent simple acts with no computerized lighting wizardry.
The mandatory Contortion act is entertaining. But when they started stacking chairs, I was ready to protest. Old school circus is a refreshing throw back, but I’d seen Chinese troupes perfect this act decades ago. Shockingly, that turned out to be the favourite act of one of my non-gymnast friends. It’s a brilliant twist.
The most difficult act is Rola Bola. It looks impossible to me. You have to see it to believe it.
I was happy this show has no “clowns”. The one so-called Clown Act was hilarious. A brilliant bit of physical comedy that reminded me of the best of Jim Carrey and Andy Kaufman.
The Hands Puppetry act is fascinating and edgy, as well.
Banquine. Brilliant. These Bases are as good as any I’ve seen.
But the favourite act of the gymnast I was with was Acro Net. Rather than yet another variation of Tramp wall, this show has a gigantic trampoline. Hugely difficult skills done with the assistance of double bounce. Acro Net has tons of future possibilities.
Personally I could live without Invisible Circus and Yo-Yo. But this show has very few dull moments compared to most.
Kurios is a brave and interesting experiment, especially for those who’ve seen a lot of shows.
It travels next to Denver, Chicago, Costa Mesa CA and Los Angeles.
